The house has served as a trading post, post office, community center, town hall and home to the Stranahans. The Stranahan House has stood at the center of Fort Lauderdales growth since it was built and played a significant role in the economic and social life of this community. Stranahan House is one of the earliest pioneer homes of Fort Lauderdale. Mr Stranahan and his wife lived here on the beautiful New River. Mrs. Stranahan taught the young Seminole children here. Mr. Stranahan met his demise by jumping in the River. Many say this historic home is "haunted". Be sure to take a docent tour and hop aboard the water taxi behind the home for a river trip of historic proportions.

We enjoyed our visit to the Stanahan house. The guided tour by Peter was very informative about the family as well as the the history of the beginnings of Fort Lauderdale. Also, the house was already beautifully decorated for Christmas.

The Stranahan House is a historic gem located just off Las Olas Boulevard on the New River. Originally a Ferry to cross the river and the first Post Office, the Stranahan House was where it all began for Fort Lauderdale. Eventually it became an important trading post, a school, a restaurant, and now it's an enjoyable tourist attraction. Tours take about 1 hour. Admission Price. Reservations required. Parking Garage nearby. Note: There is a Cheesecake Factory across the street where you can dine before or after your tour.
