I couldn't agree more with everything the previous reviewer (“Pleasant but not Wonderful”) said about The Gardens. It just wasn't what I expected given the reviews I'd read.

Most likely, people enjoy the atmosphere and have a genuine good time here, but it's _not_ a spectacular place worth a splurge. Not really a resort either--more akin to a grown-up, delux version of summer camp with lots more alcohol.

The staff seem nice enough, but they are also busy. They are professional.

The rooms are a bit worn in the bathrooms and I could hear everything coming from the bathroom next door.

In the mornings, we were woken by a combo of jackhammers/traffic from Simonton road and a rooster.

The breakfast is cereals, fruit salad, toast/bagels/cinnamon bread, hardboiled eggs, coffee/tea/juice, pastries.

The location is great, easy walking distance to everything on Duval St. Very safe--not a rundown neighborhood, but across a small street from the City Hall.

Clientel tends to be mostly older couples, most likely because of the rates of the hotel.

Mosquitos were a problem. No way we could sleep without the AC and leave windows open.

Pool/jacuzzi area seems to be where everyone hangs out. Good condition, but not large area.

Overall, going back to Key West again, I'd probably look for something nearby in a lower price range. But if you're looking to hangout by the pool and socialize with similar group of people, this may be the place for you.

Might be a fun place to book for a mid-sized family reunion.

After the eulogies we had perhaps expected more.

GIven the strong pound this hotel is still quite pricey for what you get.

The welcome is good with a glass of champagne. Make sure that you park up before you drink it as the car park is quite small.

Our room (2) was in the main house and was OK but had no easy chairs. The bed was comfortable and the airconditioning effective. The bathroom needs updating as the taps drip and it is generally rather care worn. Nowhere to place our bathroom requisites. We did not like the pump action toiletries - rather akin to a Travel lodge.

Internet connectivity was dreadful, almost useless. The shared balcony was pleasant but the fan had thrown one of its wooden blades off onto the floor. This was dangerous so I reported it. No action was taken and during the night a second blade was thrown off. At a second request the fan was switched off for the remainder of our stay.

Housekeeping was not generally thorough and I was surprised that the outside ashtray was not emptied at all during our stay.

Breakfast was OK, repetitive after three days, nothing cooked. Breakfast room needs somehwere to rest things whilst compiling your meal.

Much is mentioned by others about Carlos - he was not around during our stay. Billy the Barman seemed popular but on his day off we were served by Joel who was pleasant and prepared a delightful Mojito.

The pool was small but pleasant, the hot tub seemed fine and the gardens are a good feature. The hotel lies directly under the flightpath into Key West. airport This could annoy anyone who doesn't enjoy plane watching or is troubled by engine noise.

One review complains about the noise of Simonton Street. Yes it is noisy, but then Key West is a noisy place generally. The constant calls of roosters, the unending throb of Harley Davidsons and deep tuned trucks are a contrast to the silence of the (expensive) rented electric cars used by tourists. We didn't use our car at all during our stay, we walked everywhere. Otherwise you can rent bicycles or take a cycle rickshaw.

One reviewer (a canadian) described the Gardens as set in a slum. This is nonsense. The area is pleasant and very handy for a walk to the lively side of town. Plenty of choice for eating and shopping. We loved Key West, having been told by friends that we would hate it.

The staff at the Gardens are unfailingly polite and 'professionally' friendly but I never felt that it was genuine.

The fact that all the staff disappear at 8pm is quite strange so if you enjoy attentive service stay elsewhere.

My teenage granddaughters and I stayed here for a few days. We wish we had booked more time. The staff is great and makes you feel like an honored guest. The fact that it is a GREEN property adds to the experience but takes nothing away from the relaxed, lush atmosphere of the pool and rooms. Breakfast was excellent too. We'll go back for sure, just as soon as we can.
