It is true that you get what you pay for generally, but in this case it is not. Following, this experience we stayed in a whole host of hotels in a similar price range - £110 per night/ $160 approx and we got much much better comfort and quality. This place was so bad, that if they were charging 'peanuts' - very little - it would have been acceptable, but we felt and indeed were totally ripped off money-wise. It was shoddy, dirty, in need of major repairs, super noisy (air conditioning, fan and fridge!!) and there was no security in the room or behind reception (nerve wracking, I think, especially for foreigners with passports) and there was an attitude that did not bode well - swearing and suspicious mates of the Receptionist. The air conditioner was so ancient and noisy you could not sleep with it on and then it was 26'C and even with it off, the fan was about as loud and squeaky as a fan can get and the fridge rattles all night. The place needs a major major refurbishment, some security put in place, a massive clean up of attitude and the rough and ready mates of the establishment should be well out of the way of Customers if around at all. This is the worst hotel stay we have had in years anywhere in the world and we've been to about 20 countries together, not to mention UK based stays. We don't mind camping and if we did not have to pay much then I would find it acceptable, but the money we paid for this really shoddy and rough stay was insane. There wasn't breakfast either and the roof was falling down over the Reception area. I could go on, there is more negative stuff, but that it enough. For £40 or $60 a night, that little, you'd go 'OK, rough and for that it is fair!!', but what a serious rip off.

The board of health definitely needs to make a visit to this property!! It is the dirtiest most undermaintaned places have ever visited. The curtain rod which happened to actually be a PVC pipe fell on my husband's head in the middle of the night. We slept on towels because the sheets were blood stained and ripped on a bed that was simply an old bumpy mattress on wheels. We decided not showering was cleaner than ever stepping into their shower and on top of everything we got locked inside the room due to a broken lock and nobody at the front desk would answer the phone for almost half an hour. They moved us to a "better" room which had holes in the floors and inches of dust on the ceiling fan to the point where we just sneezed the entire night WORST STAY OF OUR LIVES!!!!

I think you need to have realistic expectations when staying anywhere in the keys. If you are used to the Marriot or Hyatt this is not the place for you. However, we know that many of the accommodations in the keys are older beach style rooms. Yellow tail Inn Is a older, family owned place. There is a small beach suitable for sunning, but for swimming you need to go to sombrero beach or one of the state park beaches. Seaweeds are cleaned from the beach area every morning. Chairs available for sunning. The small pool at Yellowtail was cold, but the pool next door, which you are permitted to,use, was larger and very warm. Both were clean.
Kitchens are listed as fully equipped, but there could be a few more pots and pans. However, with some aluminum foil and use of the grills outside, you can prepare a good meal if you choose. Basics of coffee pots, stove microwave refrigerator did the job for us. Some units have a dishwasher, some do not.
There is a restaurant/ market next door, the Grassy Key Outpost, which is great as a restaurant but also for items like paper towels, wine, beer, sodas, snack, forgotten toiletries etc.
Rooms are small, but clean. Housekeeping came by every day to replace towels and take out trash. The towels have seen better days but were clean and when I wient to the office to request a few extra for my long hair they were graciously provided. Appliances are older, but they work just fine. The second day we were there we had an electrical issue in our stand alone unit. An electrician was called immediately, but when we expressed concerns we were relocated to a different unit right away,. Even though the issue was repaired by the end of the day we were permitted to stay In The second, larger unit for the rest of our stay at no extra charge. , it was raining that day and we were offered assistance in moving our belongings to the second unit at 7:30 am, which we declined.
Seemed like a lot of guests were only there for a night or two, as we saw people come and go a lot. Assume that is because a lot of folks travel up and down the Florida keys, staying one or two nights each place. A few seemed to be regular and long term guests.
Any questions we had about the area were answered, all the staff we encountered were very nice and helpful.
Call and ask specific questions about the unit you are interested in, as they are all different. Expect Florida keys type accommodations.
overall, a good place to stay if you, have realistic expectations.

Room Tip: Look at rooms online, then call and ask questions. Different units have different amenities

Oh the stories you get from staying here. Now its not the most expensive place by far in the area but certain thing should be expected. Its not unreasonable to expect: no massive amount of mold in the shower, curtains that cover the windows, towels in the room that are not riped and frayed, sheets for the pull out, more than ONE outlet in the bedroom. When I mean one I mean one. Should I plug in the lamp, clock or my phone, Hmmmmm. The pool is a joke so you go next door. Its no beach, just a sand box with water that is full of blown in garbage. The sand box has old plastic chairs to sit in. The dock is covered, I mean covered in bird droppings. I know the birds are everywhere but with a few plastic anti bird covers on the dock poles it could be limited. Maybe a hose to wash it off? The mattress was older than I am. I am 50 by the way. Oh and one last thing the recliner is so old the leather is cracked and coming apart. I have pictures of everything. I dont expect perfection or anything close to it staying at a place like this but COME ON put a tissue box out and resonable towels! I would have complained but the office is hardly ever staffed.

Room Tip: Move along to the next hotel on your list

I almost don't have words for how terribly unkempt this place is. To quote part of their policy ' A service fee of $12.00 plus tax will be charged daily and includes use of beach towels, wireless internet, parking and use of dvd movies from office. No refunds because of our small size....'
There were no beach towels provided, the parking is a gravel lot, the beach is next door at their 'sister hotel' Casa del Sol, and I mean on top of you next door. The pool is the size of an 8 person hot tub. The furniture is dated holey pleather and the floor although looked clean was filthy. In the pictures you can see the mold around the tub and the back door. They tried to hide the door with a floor length rolling blind, was locked and the back patio was full of old pallets and wood. The concrete staircase is crumbling, the window air conditioners are worthless and the clock radio cord was chewed down to bare wires. The reason for their strict no refund policy is not because they are small and that affects their business, it is because it's a dump and there is definitely not a reinvestment into upkeep. If there was a -10 I'd give them a -20 stars.
