Owner description: Snorkel SOMBRERO LIGHTHOUSE & NATIONAL MARINE SANCTUARY - the third largest reef in the world - located six miles off-shore. This is the #1-rated reef in the Florida Keys for snorkeling!!!

This is my second trip with Starfish and this one was just as good. The weather was perfect and Tonya and Dusty took great care in getting us there safely. They made sure everyone was safe while snorkling, and they were both very knowledgeable of the area.
Reviews complaining of weather or swells should have nothing to do with the company, and others who think staff was abrupt may need to think of the responsibilities of staff to keep us safe and secure on the journey. I can’t wait to go back and see if the 3ft barracuda is still there!!

We stayed in Cudjoe Key for the week and booked a snorkeling trip with Starfish based on Trip Advisor and Yelp reviews. The reviews for Sombrero and Lighthouse reef sounded promising.
The woman who gave “instructions” to the maximum capacity crowd on the dock would benefit from some customer service classes. She was needlessly abrubt with people at times waiting to board the vessel. Although she did share important and required safety information, her demeanor set an uncomfortable tone for what should be an enjoyable experience.
We pulled out of the dock on the bayside and began our journey to the reef. However, much to our surprise slowed down after traveling about 20 minutes and started dropping anchor still on the bayside in a small cove surrounded by private homes/condos. At that point, our captain, Angie, said to many of the equally surprised passengers “yeah, I don’t know if she told you but we aren’t going out to the reef today since there are six foot waves out there, so this is Pirates Cove.”
So for the next hour or so we snorked over some dead coral in 2-6 feet of water. Most people were lucky to see a couple fish or maybe a lobster. This was easily the worst paid snorkeling trip we have taken. I would have preferred to have been notified beforehand that we would not be going to the reef and given the option to cancel rather than to take an expensive boat ride.

This was a complete let down. We went on the sunset cruise on 3/27/18. First, the cost of this is tour is $40 + tax. It is 30 minutes shorter then the 9 am and 1 pm cruise and costs more. The lady at check in was rude, and she clearly needed help. I had the coupon for $30 for the trip and she said she doesn't accept it for this tour. The coupon only says not to be combined with other offers. It does not say anything about restrictions. We had Angie (captain) and Dusty (1st mate). Neither of them had great personalities. Dusty should take a drug test.
We left the dock about 20 minutes behind schedule. Angie ran the boat onto a sand bar. A few of the men, my husband included pushed the boat off. At the reef, the fish were fantastic. However, to many waves for me to enjoy the experience or for my child to feel comfortable getting in. Angie was more concerned about the equipment then the people in the water. There was also a women who got sea sick. This can happen to anyone!! However, Dusty could have asked her to sit in a different location, instead of at the ladder where she would vomit, and people had to climb on the boat as she is losing her lunch. Gross!!
On the return we hit some of the construction on the old 7 mile bridge and scared everyone. The captain of a boat with way to many people on board should have been paying closer attention to the path she was taking too avoid the sandbar, and the bridge issue. Less time checking her phone.
the boat was over full and people were sitting on the ground and coolers, some were soaking wet.
One positive, is that the drunk man did get asked to get off the boat. Thank you.
A person in our group joined the Spirit snorkeling tour for less money, the same evening and had a fantastic experience. The captain of the spirit boat stopped to talk about the reef, and they received free champagne, meats, and cheese.
Would love the company to offer our money back.

A beautiful snorkeling experience. The fish and reef where so colorful. The kids had a blast. The waves were a bit to large for this Mom. I felt more comfortable watching from the deck. Would definitely go again when the waves are smaller. The crew was great, fun and conscious of everyone in the water.

We had a great afternoon with Starfish Snorkeling Tours. The crew was great, very friendly and helpful. Even with some higher winds and waves it was still a fun afternoon. This was my daughters first time snorkeling over a reef and she had a blast. Tons of marine life to see. They have a great boat for snorkeling, tons of room. We will be visiting them again in the near future.
