Very enjoyable food and atmosphere. The bathroom did not have Toto Japanese heated toilets with sprayers.

absolutely loveeed this place. Came to south beach to visit and what a surprise!!! nice sushii place
What a fun place! I understand this gimmick is popular in Japan but I've never seen it in Canada or US cities before now. The food plates float around a river in little boats and you take what you want. The plates are color coded by price. The meal was inexpensive by the standards of Japanese cuisine. There food was fresh. The presentation on the plates and overall flavor of the combinations was meh in my opinion. I think I have come to expect that Japanese food is presented in a beautiful way with careful presentation and careful flavor combinations, but I think based on what they are accomplishing in the space they have to work with (small staff, cramped quarters, and many many people waiting), it was very very good. The waitstaff are literally running around the entire time working their tails off. There aren't a lot of tables so the wait time was substantial even on a Tuesday evening in March.
An unexpected bonus for our trip. Read the reviews so you know what to expect. The selection was was excellent, but not a lot "boutique" type rolls. However, all of those great standards are there with a few unique dishes mixed in.
The place is definitely the epitome of a "hole-in-the-wall". Be sure you look at the address on the door (920) as there is a place two doors down with a similar name, and I never saw "Katana" written anywhere outside.
The other reviews about the wait is true, but worth it. The place opens at 6pm, we were first in line at 5:20pm. By the time the place opened, there were at least 40 people in line.
We thought the service was greak. Mika was our server. We told her we were first-timers and walked us through the process. Very easy, drinks served fast, and Mika gave us some great specialty sauces as well.
We had 20 plates between the two of us, with 3 beers and hot tea. The total was $83. We were a little concerned that they may only take cash (again, that hole-in-the-wall feel), but they do take credit cards. Also, don't worry about a dress code...you will be fine.
Highly recommend this place when you are in the area.
I live only one block away but the place opens at 6:03 and there is always a line at the door by 5:45.
Do you know what that means??? The best place in North Miami Beach.
The wait in line is worth every second. This is the best and freshest sushi in town.
