If you want to visit Kinabatangan this is a good place to stay. It takes about an hour by boat to get here. The chalets are huge and clean. The food is very good. There's an internet connection as well. I think it is pretty expensive (800 RM for one night) but worth the money. I was a bit disappointed to get only one tour at the end of the afternoon as other companies do two or three for the same price. You have to be lucky to see animals like pygmee elephants and cats.

We booked a 3.days, 2 nights tour by Amazing Borneo Tours, Kota Kinabalu, a tour operator that proved to be reliable, well organized and very service-oriented.
The guide Mr. TAN was excellent. Well-informed, good communicator yet not always talking.
The lodge is located on big river Kinabatangan. There is an open area with reception and restaurant. The bungalows are built on stilts - they are very natural, yet providing most of the amenities of modern civilization. Numbers 119 and 120 are huge. A small entrance area, 3 steps up to the main room with a very comfy bed. AC and Fan are installed. The room is clean, yet as we are in the rainforest a gecko or aunts can appear.Safe is provided as well as bright lamps.
The food- included- is always chinese buffet. The cooking is done fresh, the meals are simple but varied and quite tasty bearing in mind where you are.
Every day at 6h30 and at 4 PM there is a 2 to 2 1/2 hours boat tour, so the wildlife safari is from the boat.
What you see is of course determined by nature..... We saw twice a wild group of pygmae elefants by the river- fantastic. Many monkeys, including 5 Probiscis (nose) monkeys. Many species of birds. hornbill, kingfisher, eagles and so on.
Important: take raingear minimum large plastic sheet and flip-flops-everything will be completely wet as it rains quite often.
Overall we were more than happy and would have liked to stay one more night- you can sit on an open area in front of the bungalow- it is exposed to nature quiet and impressive.

We arrived at Bilit yesterday after travelling from the Borneo Rainforest Lodge (which was amazing). Our guide was very friendly and was knowledgable on the area and wildlife.

We were made to carry our baggage to our rooms and there was no welcome from staff. Rooms were ok. We had a rest as we were very tired from our journey and the staff had techno music pumping at the staff quarters (which is next to the restuarant area) and we could here this pulsing through our rooms.

The boat cruise was good we saw oranutans & long tailed macaques and lots of birds.

Dinner and lunch was adequated but there was such a lack of service, you had to wait in line behind the staff for the buffet, also plates were never cleared.

The next morning at breakfast there was just a bunch of staff milling around fixing there makeup at the bar. There was no welcome at all, pretty much no interaction with them whatsoever. They barely came over to clear our plates. I was waiting for the buzzards and monkeys to appear to start rummaging for food at our table!

Great place if you like wildlife but dont expect great service (or much service at all)

Room Tip: Rooms are all the same, but chose one as far from the restuarant as possible as not to hear the satff pumping music or yelling

My boyfriend and I recently spent two nights at the Bilit Rainforest Lodge. A very friendly driver/guide picked us up from the Sandakan Yacht Club and took us to the Gomantong Caves, stopping on the way to buy us three bags full of seasonal tropical fruit! On the way to the caves we were also lucky enough to spot a young female Orang Utan with a small baby, some red langurs, a crested goshawk and various lizards and insects.

After the caves we continued onto BRL for some lunch and were then shown to our room, which we were very pleased with. Very spacious, two double beds and a single bed, ceiling fan and AC. I do wish that mosquito nets were provided though as even though my boyfriend and I covered ourselves in insect repellent we still woke up with a few bites. The setting of the lodge is beautiful we saw hornbills taking refuge from the rain on chairs outside some of the cabins and a few long-tailed macaques walking along the railings of the walkway.

The food was average, except as many other people have commented, the night they serve freshwater prawns (the size of lobsters). The ice cream was a nice touch, although not always offered, if you ask they will happily get some for you. This seems to be how service works throughout Malaysia i.e. ‘you don’t ask you don’t get’.

Our three river cruises were fantastic (2 evening, 1 morning). We saw 4 Orang Utans, including another mother and baby, countless Proboscis monkeys, macaques, hornbills and also a heard of Pygmy Elephants! Our guide (Tan) was great and gave good explanations about each animal’s ecology to help everyone understand each animals place in the rainforest. I noticed that BRL had the newest and nicest boats out of the other ones we saw and also had a much quieter engine, for that alone I would recommend this lodge over others as the river cruises are the main reason anyone will be travelling to this area.

My wife and I spent two days/nights at Bilit Rainforest Lodge. Our cabin was extremely spacious, and the airconditioning worked. The staff was gracious and always helpful. Food was OK (what more do you expect in the bloody middle of nowhere?) And the wine and beer prices were extremely reasonable compared with elsewhere in East Malaysia. The lodge is relatively isolated, so much so that we woke up one morning to see two oriental pied hornbills perched on a railing no more than 20 feet from our verandah!

The morning and afternoon cruises along the Kinabatangan river were awesome, thanks in great part to our two spotters, one, our private guide (Vijay from Sandakan), the other the boatman. Three times we spotted multiple groups of orang utans feeding in the trees, and countless times did we see hornbills (four different species)--once, 12 oriental pieds in one tree. Proboscis monkey were numerous as were familes of macaques. A sleeping yellow-ringed cat snake was seen, as well as so many birds that I can scarcely remember half (including storks, kingfishers, snake birds, water fowl).

On our last night, most serendipitously, all the guests at the lodge were invited to the kampung next door to attend the ceremonious end to a three-day Malay wedding. The whole village (and then some) were there, 200 strong. Songs were sung, prayers said, massive amounts of food served, the bride and group seated on thrones, first in Western dress, and then in traditional costume. The merriment lasted into the early morning, and we were made to feel as at home as if we had been friends of long standing.

There are a number of "jungle resorts" along the river. I have no way of making a comparison, but I would not hesitate to recommend to any friends traveling to Sabah that they stay at the Bilit.
