Owner description: A delightful village museum that recounts the island's history through photographs, exhibits and live presentations.

Whilst staying on the island (our 8th visit, at White Sands #15 this time - a beautiful unit!!) we visited the historical village and museum for an insight into the lives of the island's pioneers, their way of life, their houses, the hardships they faced and how they built up this island and turned it into a thriving community.
The village and museum are a worthy testament to those people, who came here a long time ago and made it their home.

Sanibel has a very interesting history and whenever you can get a little background on where you are visiting - I think it really adds to the trip.

They have done a nice job preserving some key buildings from the island's history.

You definitely will leave feeling educated.

They also have a fun scavenger hunt for the kids. This is a nice touch. It kept the kids engaged while we looked around.

Just be warned: the mannequin of the first post master is maybe the most creepy looking mannequin ever! Ha, ha!

The whole site is definitely worth checking out. Highly recommended.

Spent a few hours seeing actual houses that pioneering Floridians lived in on Sannibel Island in the late 1800's/early 1900's. There are audios in each building which explain who lived in the homes and what their lives were like.

At this time of year, opening hours are extremely limited (Tue-Sat 10am-1pm). We arrived at noon, and an hour was good, but not good enough to explore all of these transplanted buildings and furnishings from old Sanibel.

What is so amazing is that these various buildings; homes, post office, school, general store, are all filled with period furniture and much more. I'm talking items in the general store, appliances in the house, etc. Go ahead, sit in an old chair, pick up an old can of Cambells soup, etc. etc. Nothing is nailed down, roped off, and no one gets searched when they leave! Un-real, but it provides a very immersive experience.

Lovely grounds and staff and, again, an hour is not enough to explore. As someone who has toured the Louvre more than once, I sort of liked this look into the past better!

We visit the village every time we're in Sanibel as it's so good. If you're interested in the history of the island. It's a must. There's a film - interview with Sam Bailey, one of the pioneers and you can view several if the homesteads, etc which have been restored and moved to the new village site.
It's really fascinating and an insight to how life on Sanibel once was. Well worth a visit and the best $10 spent on Sanibel!
