If you like birds you can easily spend an hour there on a side visit. Maybe not that much more time.

I always stop her when I am in the Keys. It is on the southern end of Key Largo and a good first stop in the Keys. There is no entrance fee but they do accept donations. the birds they have in captivity have been injured to a point that they cannot be returned to the wild. You will see many birds up close that you may never see in the wild. There are also many birds that have been released into the wild from the sanctuary that hand out around there because they feel safe. It is great to see the work they are doing with these wonderful creatures.

It may not be a huge place with hundreds of birds, but it is a wonderfully managed rehab center. They have a variety of injured/non-releasable birds that they care for, and there are beautiful wild birds attracted to the area as well. It is free to enter, but there is an optional donation box. They use the donations to buy food, pay for medical expenses, and upkeep the exhibits. This is a great place to visit and support. They do great work!

Thank you so much for reviewing our Sanctuary, and for encouraging others to support our cause. In many ways, what we do is a labor of love and anything people can give is so very appreciated. We are glad to hear you found your visit enjoyable, and that you had the chance to see some wild birds in the surrounding mangroves. Come back and see us next time life brings you our way!

Hubby and I had a day out in the keys to survey the damage from the recent hurricane Irma. We were very pleased to see that one of our favorite stops along the way, the wild bird rehabilitation center, seems to have survived the hurricane pretty well. Not all the birdcages had birds in them but many of them did, and the surrounding area looked pretty decent considering what had just happened there. This is a very worthwhile place to stop and support just for 20 minutes, plus they have very nice clean new bathrooms. And a beautiful view down at the bay albeit the tide was in when we visited.

Mwooduk,

Thank you for stopping by and checking in on us at the Sanctuary after Irma. We feel very fortunate that the bulk of our Sanctuary made it out with minimal damage. Even more humbling has been all the efforts of volunteer groups coming in to help us clean up debris and get ourselves back up on our feet.
(As for the tide: yep. We had a King Tide roll through recently and it brought the water up pretty high for a bit. Just our luck to have a hurricane followed by a King Tide. :D )
We are about to have some really exciting projects underway over the course of the next few months. Next time you stop by, hopefully you all will get to see the completed product. (I know all the staff, interns, and volunteers are jumping up and down with excitement to see how everything goes).

Best,

Jordan B.
