The advertising says the azaleas are in bloom from January through March, so visiting at the end of January seemed like a good bet. We were shocked by the paucity of azaleas. They were few and far between, as if the gardens had been attacked by a flood or virus and were in need of refurbishing. When you visit a public garden you expect a lush display of gorgeous flowers; but there are much more beautiful azaleas all around the grounds of Rollins College in Winter Park. There was the unexpected advantage of getting to see many huge and beautiful homes while en route to Kraft Azalea Gardens, but we noticed with surprise that whoever is doing the gardening for these wealthy homeowners prefers to shave their azalea bushes into flat-top hedges, allowing only a few blossoms to sneak in between the leaves.
