Attraction details
Owner description: The National Infantry Museum emphasizes the values that define the Infantryman, as well as the nation he protects: Loyalty, Duty, Respect, Selfless Service, Honor, Integrity, and Personal Courage. It preserves and displays one of the greatest collections of military artifacts in the world, but it is a museum of people, not things. As a visitor, you will meet the Infantryman face to face and join him on his journey. You will come to understand why an Infantryman does what he does, why he puts himself in harm’s way in defense of an idea and you will leave transformed, just as the Infantry transforms the man into the Soldier. The 190,000-square-foot museum opened in June 2009 on a 200-acre tract of hardwoods and pines just outside the gates of the Fort Benning Maneuver Center of Excellence.

Stop here if you are a military fan. This museum is filed with history and snags your attention. After service to our country for 24 years this museum brought back fond memories and family history.

Obviously, there is NOTHING else to do in Columbus, but this is indeed worth the trip. Don't let the first floor fool you in thinking that the museum is over - that's just the overview; a tasting. The truly remarkable history is downstairs.

We evacuated from Hurricane Irma to Columbus, Ga which had never been on my radar as a trip destination. What a nice weekend. Great Riverwalk, excellent restaurants, nice Farmer's market and downtown and this gem of a museum. We were very impressed by the exhibits - lifelike figures in amazing settings and excellent descriptions. Broken down chronologically it proceeds seamlessly and never gets boring. In addition, an IMAX theater where we saw an excellent D-Day documentary in 3D. Museum is free ($5 contribution PP recommended) and we got a cheap Groupon for Movie, Soda and Popcorn. Great afternoon. Thank you Irma!

My dad and I spent 5 days in the Columbus GA area writing out hurricane Irma until we could head back to home in Florida. My dad -89 yrs old and a Korean War vet, wanted to cruise by Fort Benning where he spent 9 months doing boot camp in 1950. To our surprise and delight we came upon the Infantry Museum and went through it. Boy what a gem! Well organized, tons of info including lots my dad could relate to and spurred a lot of memories and discussion with me about his military experience. The museum is huge and leave you awestruck with the displays, artifacts, information and history.
