The state park was so much fun. Hiking into the cave at the bottom of the river was really cool. The weather wasn't great while we were there so we didn't get to explore as much as we would have liked.

We drove down from our cabin near Garden of the Gods to explore this new-to-us state park. The town of Cave in Rock is very quaint, and we also enjoyed driving along some of the unique looking houses right on the river.

This state park is pretty small but has some nice features. Obviously, the star attraction is the cave. There is a marked parking area down below, but if it's not busy when you are there (it was not for us at 10 AM on a Friday in March), there's a small pullout up top right by the stairs where you can park. There are many stairs to go down, so like others mentioned, the cave is not handicap accessible.

The cave itself and the views surrounding it right on the river are really neat. We spent about ten minutes checking out the cave and taking pictures by the river on the sand. Only two other people were there at the same time as us.

After viewing the cave, we wanted to try some hiking on the trails we had read about. Even though the lodge/restaurant wasn't technically opened yet, they let us come in to use the restroom and gave us directions to find the trails. One is down past the cabins and another is on the way in. So we backtracked to try the first trail. The area had just gotten a lot of rain the past few days, so the trail was pretty muddy and also not well marked. We didn't end up doing the whole loop, maybe only one mile total, but it was super peaceful and we enjoyed being out in the woods. It's pretty hilly, so I'd describe the trail as moderate. I'd love to try it in drier conditions. I also would love to check out the cabins they have that sit right on the water.

While touring Southern Illinois, i took the opportunity to visit Cave in Rock State Park for the very first time.... While i wouldn't plan a vacation around it, it's still very much worth visiting if you're in the area.... If you've been to other caves and grottos, CiR might seem a bit meh, but if you haven't, or you're a cave enthusiast, it's pretty cool to see....especially for Illinois...... Either way, IMO, it's worthy of a visit and it's one of those places you need to tick off your to-do list.... Also, while i didn't camp there, i did take a drive thru the campground and it looked like a pretty nice campground.....
