Had a free afternoon today so drove 75 miles from Champaign, IL, a town with a number of fine restaurants. Was very impressed by the beautiful space, extensive menu, and fine cuisine and service. If you are anywhere near the area, or heading to points west/east on I-70 or north/south on I-57, do yourself a favor and eat here. Lunch/dinner only. Not inexpensive, but well worth it. For travellers, it's right off the interstate! Cheers!

It astounds to find such a superb place right off the freeway in Effingham IL, no less. A great building, brand new (though it looks lik a remade barn/loft space) with its own gardens. Great wines start at just $5 a glass. Locally grown ingedients with clever combinations. The only thing I think of that wasn't fantastic was the sauces that came with the morel mushrooms tempura but hey - they didn't need a sauce, they were delicious.
I travel the US extensively and I live in a great restaurant town- Houston. Firefly Grill can compete with the best anywhere. I increasingly find amazing eats in the most unexpected places these days. I think the big city chefs are getting complacent.

We've eaten at the Firefly Grill twice in the past 6 months when we've been in town for the weekend. It's a cool place with a pitched tin roof and flip-top glass water bottles on the table. No dress code- there was a guy in camo and jeans sitting next to an older lady in church clothes the last time we were there. We were seated immediately on both visits, although it did seem to fill up later in the evening. In September, we sat out on the enclosed porch overlooking the little lake and had a lovely dinner; however, I don't think the porch is air-conditioned, so it might be a little stuffy on hot summer days. There is also a small deck, a bar, and a private room. Service is attentive but not pushy, and the owner came over to check on us last time.

Effingham isn't exactly the place that you'd expect food like this. The crab cakes were excellent, and the Montana Mignon (rare filet mignon in puff pastry) is out-of-this world. Their caesar salad has homemade dressing. The sides are excellent- their mashed potatoes are perfect comfort food! They change items on their menu regularly. On our last trip, the waitress mentioned that the tomatoes in the fried tomato appetizer had been picked that morning in the garden. We haven't saved room for dessert yet, but their selections sounded really good! They also have Sunday brunch. Highly recommended.
