We were in town visiting Northwestern on a college tour. We stayed for the Penn State - Northwestern game the following day. In full disclosure, I'm a Penn State alum who's used to sitting with 107,000 in Beaver Stadium in a raucous atmosphere. There's a ton of things to admire about Northwestern but Ryan Field is not one of them. Where do I start? The scoreboard is in the end zone on an angle, and inevitably gets blocked by TV cameras, so maybe 15% of the crowd can see it. There's that "big time" feel that's missing from being in the stadium, maybe because the team is just OK. The 3 sections of Penn Staters who were there were louder than everyone else in the stadium. Ryan Field should be a huge home field advantage for NW, but it isn't. There's a lot that needs to be done to bring it up to the standards of other Big 10 schools. Northwestern should be competitive in the Big 10 West and renovations to Ryan Field would go a long way towards achieving that goal. There's a dearth of parking. We parked on the lawn of a fraternity house for $25. Well worth it !
