We stayed here for a weekend while exploring the Shawnee Hills Wine Trail and Giant City State Park. This inn's location is perfectly situated for these activities, and is only about 10 miles from Carbondale. There aren't enough good things to say about our experience here. The property is literally in the woods, and the only sounds you hear while sitting on the balcony or back deck are those that belong in nature. The property managers are very warm and friendly, and more than willing to help. The food was organic, much was locally sourced, and it was all delicious. The room's decor helped us instantly relax (I especially enjoyed the river rock shower floor) and was cozy and comfortable. It was a wonderful experience and we'll definitely return!

Room Tip: Suites 3 and 4 have better views of the woods and feel a little more private (Suites 1 and 2 face the driveway)

We really enjoyed reading your review! You've done an excellent job touching on so many great reasons for our future guests to come stay with us, while they check out this amazing region called Southern Illinois. We hope you'll make it back soon!

Spent a long weekend for the total solar eclipse there (August 18-22, 2017) and it was spectacular in every way! The Inn and Cottages are a labor of love of owners Greg and Shauna Wellman. Innkeepers Loraine and Malcolm are warm and welcoming. I stayed in one of the two-level cottages -- unlike anything I've experienced. From the plated breakfasts to the countryside, it was a completely relaxing stay -- with a once-in-a-lifetime celestial event to cap it off! Hope to return soon and often.

Room Tip: Rooms in the inn have wifi. Cottages do not, but that's part of the charm of being unplugged.

It was our pleasure to meet you and we certainly hope you'll come back from the West Coast to stay with us again.
Indigo & Sienna are awesome 1 bedroom cottages that mirror image each other, so one is not better than the other to experience.
For our future guests, a note about breakfast, our Eclipse Package Stay did include a plated breakfast for all. Please see our website for details about adding breakfast to a cottage stay reservation.
It was a fabulous Solar Eclipse because we had awesome friends here to share it with!

This was our third stay at this "green" inn. Large crowds and congestion were expected for Eclipse 2017 in Makanda/Carbondale , center of longest duration, and the hosts went above and beyond to accommodate the guests' needs during this unique time. The breakfasts were five stars as usual. The very comfy beds and high end linens made for great nights sleep after all the excitement of the eclipse activities going on in the area. The inn and cottages are beautifully decorated with interesting use of wood. Easy access to restaurants, wineries, orchards and outdoor activities.

We celebrated my husband's retirement with a vacation at the Makanda Inn. What a relaxing and special way to kick off this new chapter in our lives! I'm tempted to keep this hidden treasure our little secret, but that wouldn't be fair to our gracious hosts, Malcom and Lorraine.

Everything from the location to the uniquely decorated rooms to the gourmet breakfasts was perfect. Even the coffee is something to rave about! The Inn is so unique that my description will hardly do it justice. You really have to visit to get an idea of what makes it so special. The Inn is very eco friendly. The walls are actually made of straw and covered with a masonry plaster, and the rooms are beautifully different. We massaged our tired feet on the river stone floor in the shower after a hike at nearby Giant City State Park, and we slept soundly each night in our luxurious and comfy bed.

There is a large common area downstairs with sitting and eating areas and even your own private bar! Makanda is located smack dab in the middle of the Shawnee Wine Trail, so it's fun to bring a bottle back to the Inn and enjoy it in the relaxing common area. Malcom invited us to think of the common area as our living room, and we felt very comfortable using it.

Breakfast each morning was expertly prepared with mostly organic and locally grown ingredients. I think the waffles with fresh peaches and ice cream were my favorite, but my husband was partial to the breakfast burritos. It was fun to see what was cooking each morning.

I didn't expect to find so much to do in southern Illinois. Giant City State Park (which is just around the corner) and the Shawnee National Forest offer some beautiful hiking trails with unusual scenery. A visit to Garden of the Gods is worth the drive. Malcom and Lorraine are a great source of information about the area.

To make a long story short, we highly recommend a visit to the Makanda Inn and southern Illinois. Just save a room for us so that we can come back to visit! We still need to check out the breweries, a few more wineries, a cypress swamp, some hiking trails that we missed the first time, and maybe even a zip line!

Room Tip: Rooms 3 & 4 look out to the woods and are a bit more private.

We stayed 3 nights in the west end cottage with another couple. Grass roof bedrooms in back in ground straw walls. Very quiet.
Full kitchen and flat screen tv and dining table.
Short walk from Inn along gravel path that has lights at night. Good sitting area in front of cottage. Only negative is the train that passes through at 3 am.
Malcolm and Lorraine are awesome and the breakfast each morning was well worth the cost.
We may come back to sit around the firepit some night

West End Cottage is becoming quite popular for 1 or 2 couples! Thank you for describing your stay and sharing some great details about the cottage and the property.
So glad you enjoyed our breakfasts, we do aim to please!
It would be nice to have you back, the cooler fire pit weather is just around the corner!
