Stopped here along our travels to beautiful Southern Illinois at the recommendation of a friend and positive online reviews (not to mention it's owned by a distant cousin of mine). It's a charming little restaurant in the tiny little hamlet of Stonefort. Been through this area countless times in my life, and it's nice to see a decent restaurant making a go of it. If you're biking or walking the Tunnel Hill trail, it's just across the road and while we were there met several friendly cyclists stopping in. We had the pulled pork sandwiches, fries and baked beans and all were great! The owner is polite and sincere. It's cash only. Appreciated the fact that it has decent hours of operation so that we were able to stop in for a later lunch.

My wife and I rode our tandem bicycle on the Tunnel Hill State Trail over the Memorial Day weekend from Harrisburg to Tunnel Hill and back. On our return, we stopped at Bynum's. It was mid-afternoon, so there were few people in the restaurant, but we had to wait to be served because the owner was busy filling several to-go orders that were being called in! We soon found out why the place was so popular. We had smelled the smoke outside, so we ordered the BBQ sandwiches. The owner convinced us to try the homemade fries, so we ordered those as well. He deep-fried a fresh potato's worth of fries on the spot. The sandwiches were only $3.50 apiece, so we were surprised when we received them--they were fairly large, overflowing with pork shoulder that had obviously been coated with a dry rub. The smoke flavor was incredible--he told us that he uses cherry, apple, and hickory. The texture of the meat was perfect; not too dry, and not too moist. Evidently it is smoked for about 14 hours. After we were done eating he asked to fill up our water bottles with ice water. Depending on when you are there, they may have ribs, or chicken, or fish. On Saturday nights, there are often live musicians. I hope this place thrives--sometimes that doesn't happen in a small town like Stonefort. Well worth the visit if you are biking on the trail--and definitely worth the detour to drive from Harrisburg or Vienna.
