The park is beautiful. It is a great family outing. Although there are a lot of people on the trails around the visitor center, that tends to thin out the farther you get from the visitor center. We were saddened to see that so many people appear to litter; however, we saw a Boy Scout troop and others picking up the litter. I hope they realized how much they are appreciated.

Many of the trails are not stroller friendly. There are paved sections; however, there are a lot of stairs. Many people we saw were not wearing the most appropriate footwear.

It was August, so it was hot that day. There are several state parks in an 8 mile stretch on that road. This one has a number of places to go overlook the river but only one for which it was named.

I have nothing negative to say. This area is clean, well maintained and fantastically beautiful. The trails are well marked and its very kid friendly and pet friendly. We loved it

My review is this:
Great ambiance made by God! The trees, the land, the awesome canyons ,Illinois River, the history of Starved Rock that you can get by doing two separate things to help you with your journey!STOP at the Visitor Center! Please do! Great staff to help you with any question! Once you are at the Lodge:For $12.00 per person you can hop on a trolley that gives you a total overview of Starved Rock State Park,Illinois River and the neighboring town of Utica! Make look small with not much going on! A lot going on there!! This trip takes over an hour to do! But you will be educated!
Day visitors to the park will not be disappointed! No fee to get in or park your vehicle! Some State parks do! Just remember you need to leave the park clean! Cannot say as you found it! Saw empty water bottles on hiking trails! Found out not enough employees to clean up after people who choose not to clean up for themselves! Illinois State budget has something to do with not enough paid park staff!!!!!!!!
The Lodge! Great ambiance! Your choice to stay in the main lodge or the attached more modern hotel or book a log cabin cottage! The Cottages are very much in desire like a year or two ahead! Just check and ask!
I stayed in the Main Lodge with 2 full beds! Very clean and adequate! Dinner in the Main Lodge Dining Room! Food and service were good not great!
Here are the negatives:
Only one bar in this huge place! A sports bar that also services outdoor patio dining! The staff was totally overwhelmed when I arrived to get a beer! Left! Where is the nice bar to service guests that do not want to go to a sports bar?? Hmmm!
In the AM, me as a overnight guests: found out: no table with coffee/tea to serve yourself in their lobby or outside the Main dining room! vERY Disappointed! That all by itself chewed down a rating that could have been higher! Treat your overnight guests to at least one complimentary! Nope!
Also: Main Dining room for breakfast starts at 8 am!! How about the early risers like me? Had to get in the car and go to Utica!!! Not my idea of enjoying a relaxing time at the Lodge! It was not!
Just sharing!
