We were there on a Saturday, and it was so crowded it was hard to enjoy the park. Between watching for others on the narrow trails and the roots of the trees, it was almost impossible to look around while walking, which for me takes the fun out of it. I felt like I was just exercising rather than enjoying nature. The views of the river weren't that exciting to us. Enjoyed the canyons better. It's been dry so there wasn't water at the waterfalls. We enjoyed Matthiessen SP better.

This place is big enough with lots of short simple trails that are good for those who just want to have a nice easy hike, especially with kids. I enjoyed the canyons as they give the park a more unique character. There are also many high points along the Illinois river that you can check out the view from the top. I was not a fan of them however, as the view of a lot of them were over the river and the dam with construction on the other side of the river which definitely had a negative effect on the beauty of the scenery.

The park is free and you don't need to pay for the parking either which was a huge plus. Although there are lots of short trails but if you go too far, you'll find yourself 10 miles or so from the parking lot which you need to walk back. So, plan your hike wisely.

If you visit the park in spring or summer, don't forget sunscreen and more importantly, mosquito repellent and spray yourself from head to toe with it! Otherwise, you'll find yourself wondering how could they find the smallest unsprayed spot on you!

The park is beautiful. It is a great family outing. Although there are a lot of people on the trails around the visitor center, that tends to thin out the farther you get from the visitor center. We were saddened to see that so many people appear to litter; however, we saw a Boy Scout troop and others picking up the litter. I hope they realized how much they are appreciated.

Many of the trails are not stroller friendly. There are paved sections; however, there are a lot of stairs. Many people we saw were not wearing the most appropriate footwear.
