I really enjoy this hotel. It is rustic and welcoming. The staff is always professional. The hotel is clean. There are restaurants on the grounds and many great hiking trails. There is a historical trolley for a fee. This is a nice place to get out of the city and unwind.

If you haven't yet visited Starved Rock State Park, hop into your car and go there now. We just returned from a long overdue visit, our first, and it won't be our last. The Park is gorgeous -- and trees are just beginning to turn to fall colors. The Lodge is a real gem, and the dining facilities offer a variety of tasty food. The outdoor patio is a lot of fun, as you can sit and look over the canyon. Would be perfect for families, in fact, we saw many there. And one wedding party, too. BTW, parking is free and the visitor center is well done, and the folks there are helpful. The hikes are suitable for all ages, but be warned, there are steps, so if that's a challenge for you, ask at the visitor center for routes that are accessible.

We were lucky to be there in beautiful September weather. The trails are very nice, although some have lots of stairs! St. Louis Canyon is one of the prettiest we saw; it even still has a waterfall. Some of the other falls were temporarily gone because of the drought.
Some of the trails need to be maintained better, probably the fault of lack of funding. We didn't take the trolley tours, but I'm sure they would give interesting history.

Went with my 7 year old daughter and she loved it. French Canyon was her favorite and she would've stayed all day if I hadn't gotten tired.

We were there on a Saturday, and it was so crowded it was hard to enjoy the park. Between watching for others on the narrow trails and the roots of the trees, it was almost impossible to look around while walking, which for me takes the fun out of it. I felt like I was just exercising rather than enjoying nature. The views of the river weren't that exciting to us. Enjoyed the canyons better. It's been dry so there wasn't water at the waterfalls. We enjoyed Matthiessen SP better.
