“Great caves but watch your head and bring a jacket! US National Landmark”
Reviewed 19 October 2011

This is an awesome place for the whole family. Our teenage daughters enjoyed it once they stopped complaining about no internet connection. (It's a cave) I had visited when I was a teenager and the caves were just as amazing as I had remembered. The guides for both trails were very good. We started with the Dripstone trail which lasted about 70 minutes. It was a beautiful cave with many great features. The best cave is called Crystal Palace. You have to see it to really appreciate it. This trail lasts about 40 minutes and isn't the easiest walk because the flooring of the caves is uneven (it's a cave). The overhead was lower and there were some older folks who were stumbling around and struggling with not being able to stabilize themselves by touching the rocks.

“A wonderful place in a small town!!”
Reviewed 13 September 2011

Both caves are wonderful to visit. The kids had a great time. You learn a lot about caves. The tour guides are very friendly and helpful. The gift shop and outside grounds are very nice and clean. They also have small rental cabins. The only downside is the don't have much when it comes to food. They have some vending machines and a area to eat snacks. The town has a few small resturants. But for the most part you may want to travel about 30 miles away for dinner. Overall Marengo Cave it a wonderful place for a day trip, mini vacation!!

“Pretty cool!”
Reviewed 25 August 2011

This place is in the middle of nowhere so if you want to get something to eat, you would want to go the only main drag in town. The place seem small and the ticket seem a bit overpriced. However, the tour was really neat especially when one part of the cave the kids got to throw pennies to see if it sticks! I also like the fact that there are paths to walk on and they turn off the lights to show you how dark it really is. Wear sneakers or something that has a good grip. I wouldn't walk on flip flops or anything with heels. Its a bit chilly so you may want to wear a sweatshirt. The kids like it and if you bring a good camera you can take some great pictures. We did both tours and it didn't seem like we walked that long. I wouldn't recommend it to people with toddlers that they have to carry. Some parts of the path can be slippery.

“This is a great place to visit, especially on a hot day.”
Reviewed 27 July 2011

My husband and I took our 14 year old daughter and 6 year old granddaughter to the caves. We went on both tours. They were both great. Each had unique features. Short little projected presentation of the two children who found the caves on the short tour. Very informative tours. Wonderful gift shop. Kids enjoyed discovering gems in a bag of dirt as they used screens to wash away the soil like real miners. Great picnic area. Online discount tickets were nice. Tina and Hannah were great tour guides.

“Very enjoyable stop”
Reviewed 18 July 2011

My husband, 15 year old son and I visited Marengo Caves while we were in the area. We did the Dripstone tour (this is the longer one) and enjoyed it. It is about 52 degrees in the cave (they do warn you about this) and I was glad to have my jacket but our guide was in short sleeves and seemed comfortable. The tour is generally easy but there are some steep steps and a couple of steep ramps. This tour would not be a good option if you have any mobility issues. The ceiling height is low in some spots, so if you are taller you will need to duck. There was a boy about 4 or 5 years old onour tour and he had no problems following the tour but he seemed a little bored.

Our guide (Abe) was very knowledgable and entertaining. The formations were fascinating to see, and he explained how they grow only 1 inch every 100 years. I also enjoyed hearing some of the history of the caves. Many years ago, the town of Marengo used to hold meetings and church services down in the cave because it was larger than any building they had above ground.

There is a large gift shop with the usual souvenirs, t-shirts, etc. You buy your tickets for the tour in the shop and they will tell you when your tour will leave. We waited about 10 minutes for our tour.

There are some vending machines and the store has a freezer with ice cream but there is no other food service on the site. Bathrooms are clean and ample sized.

Be sure to check their website for a coupon.

Overall, this was an enjoyable couple of hours and I'm glad we stopped.
