At first glance the exterior of this historic home looks fantastic but look a little closer and it's not hard to see the place could use lots of improvements. The interior of the house appeared to be mostly original and was at one time nicely restored. You can tell someone spent the time and money to do it right but it has not been maintained as it should for what appears to be several years.
When checking in at the front desk there was a cordless phone with a note next to it that said to push the talk button for assistance which we did and was suddenly greeted by a man's voice over a speaker. That's when we noticed the video camera and speaker sitting on the far side of the desk. A rather impersonal touch and a little odd if you ask me. Only a few seconds after we told him who we were and that we were checking in the man came to the front desk from an adjoining room. It didn't seem like he was too far away and could have just greeted us at the front desk in person when we came in the front door. After showing us to our room he said since we were the first to check in we could choose between our room or the one next to it. They were both Deluxe Suites . That seemed a little odd since we booked a particular room. We went ahead and pick the room that we wanted which we figured out later was not the one we booked online which means someone else had to settle for a room other than what they booked. You could tell the room itself was a grand room with beautiful Oak trim and 12 foot tall ceilings and still could be grand with a little TLC. After settling in the first thing we noticed where the cheap curtains and curtain rods. They didn't match the room whatsoever and the curtain rods looked like something you would find in a little girl's bedroom. The ends of them had little plastic butterflies. Once you noticed them they looked ridiculous. The furniture in the living room area looked like it came from a second hand store. Not even close to trying to appear period correct. There was an old headboard and and eighties looking coffee table/footstool holding it up against the side of Whirlpool bath tub. We were told it was there as a barrier to keep people from jumping into the tub and hurting themselves. There was no place to hang a towel in the bathroom because the towel rod was missing a bracket and the rod. At first I couldn't find any soap to wash my hands in the bathroom so I looked in the cabinet under the sink where I discovered 3 small used bars of soap laying on a paper towel as if someone were saving them to use them later. Yuck. The hotel style heating and cooling unit under the window in the bedroom apparently didn't work because there was a space heater in the bedroom and in the living room area. There was some kind of air purifying machine sitting in the corner of the bedroom. It wasn't plugged in or hooked up to anything. It was just sitting there taking up space and looking like a sore thumb.
The next morning our one course "hot meal" was nothing more than an English muffin with a couple thin slices of ham and scrambled egg on it. The rest of the meal was self-serve pastries, cold cereal and a few different kinds of fruit. Not impressed with the breakfast at all. When the Innkeeper offered me coffee I said sure and grab the upside down coffee cup off of the saucer and set it right side up on the table. Before pouring the coffee he quickly grabbed it and set it back on the saucer and almost kind of scolded me for setting it on the table without the sauce underneath it.
I could go on and on with several complaints about a lot of small stuff but I think you get the point.
It was definitely not worth $180 for the night.
I really wanted to give this place a great review because the house itself is pretty amazing. It's just unfortunate it's not being maintained the way it should be.
With the right Innkeeper and a little work and money this place could be a premier bed and breakfast but with the current management that's not likely to happen. Without a change in management we would not stay again.

Most of guests are here to stay and enjoy the ambiance of bygone areas surrounded by antique furnishings and reproduction. Our price for the service is very competitive in town and in surrounding neighborhood.

When you checked in on Sat. the 18th Feb., our mansion was full, no vacancy: one innkeeper, wearing multiple hats, had to prepare up to 30 people breakfast meal next day, while at the same time, he had to check in up to 30 guests for 15 rooms, carrying their luggages to their room and showing them the facility. It is very difficult for innkeeper to station at the desk just to wait on guests to arrive. It is a typical part of what innkeeper does in a bed and breakfast setting.

When a fully paid guest checks in as opposed to discounted ones, we do all our best to upgrade rooms free of charge for him or her. In your case, we have upgraded your junior suite at $160 to deluxe suite at $195 ( plus taxes). So, actually you have gotten $35 savings from us.

People who have paid higher price for more amenities and features in a room, guests do not have to come to the dining room to get fresh premium coffee, they can avoid busy crowd by brewing their fresh coffee with Kurig machine version 2. You have access to this great convenience in the privacy of your room.

We always prefer and appreciate constructive criticisms even if it is a negative one from our guests. For it will help us improve for our guests in the future. We would like to avoid assumptive, imaginary comments or comments that are factually incorrect from our guests.

Some rooms that we specifically cater to couples with children and family. It so happens that we can only upgrade your room to this one that are furnished and arranged with family in mind. So the style is geared toward more neutral, causal and safety , emphasizing more on comfort and convenience than antiques and original period setting. Towels are laid on a side table with flowery arrangement rather than hung. Barriers are placed to avoid teens and young adult from jumping into double size whirlpool.
Duckless air conditioner is left in a corner, unplug as this is for summer only; every room has space heater as a supplementary to water sourced heat pump in each room. Additionally and separately, all rooms are equipped with hot water radiator in the bathroom area. When a guest wants to carry a small ceramic coffee cup around in the first floor during busy breakfast hours, we appreciate they carry it along with saucer, as it prevents coffee from dripping into the expensive Persian rug. But we never scold our guests for not doing the way we prefer like you mentioned. All in all, it's regrettable that you were not treated the way you wanted to in spite of our utmost intention. We hereby apologize for the short comings you have spent time indicating to us.

We enjoyed our stay at the Redstone Inn. Our host was well versed in the local history and of the inn itself. The inn does need a little TLC, but it is very charming and quaint. I would definitely stay again.

The Redstone Inn is within walking distance to the downtown area of Dubuque. Our room was clean, quiet and comfortable. The Inn is in need of some TLC, but it is still a very nice place to stay. Our breakfast was a simple egg and ham on a bagel with an assortment of fruit, cereal, yogurt and sweets on the buffet. Guests could help themselves to cookies in the sitting area during the day. This was the second time we were here and would stay again in the future.

Room tip: Their website is very helpful in choosing a room.

I took my partner and my parents there. The lobby looked great, but I was shocked at the rooms. The wallpaper was peeling, appliances weren't plugged, the rooms were stuffy, etc. The breakfast was basically the level of a McDonald. It felt like management was trying as cheap as possible on every aspect, neglecting maintenance while still renting the rooms at prime price, etc. I was rather embarrassed to have brought my family there. You may have a different experience if you get a room that was maintained -- but both rooms I got were very disappointing.

Host was very gracious. Loved the Victorian architecture and antiques! We had the least expensive room (at the very top) which was charming but could use some updates, especially in the bathroom where the wallpaper is peeling in several places. Loved sitting out on the cool stone porch at night and listening to the crickets. Also loved that this is situated in a historic district, near the bottom of the cool lift. Hope to return next year!
