We didn't even realize this sushi restaurant was in town, so close to our house.
So tonight we decided to try it.
We were NOT disappointed. The waitress, Linda (Lin Dan), was GREAT. She went above and beyond... without being too much. Truthfully, the perfect level of service for us.
We started with edamame and shrimp tempura... very good.
Then had the Hawkeye roll (we all loved it), the Wonder Women (it was good but nothing I would order again), the Crunch (spicy ... just the right amount), Philadelphia, asparagus, avocado, sweet potato.
This restaurant is small with less than a dozen tables... AND we loved that about it.
We'll be back! And will definitely be ordering take out as well.

The first thing we noticed when we first entered the small place (in a strip mall) was the foul odor...some stench of something rotten! But we somehow chose to overlook this fact, for we had read all the excellent ratings and were hungry for Japanese food. We ordered 5 yellowtail sushi along with other dishes (chicken teriyaki, yaki soba, chicken fried rice). We wanted to order more yellowtail sushi, only to be asked by the main waitress (maybe the manager?) to order other different sushi; "we have baby Yellowtail," but what she didn't say was that the baby yellowtail is an additional dollar more--$3.99 for 1 piece vs. $2.99 for 1 piece of the regular yellowtail....I distinctly remembered seeing that on the menu). She was pretty insistent on our getting other sushi and was vague about her explanation until she finally said, "We ran out of yellowtail." They ran out?! And it was still early in the evening! We lost our taste for the restaurant, especially after one (out of 3 men) of the sushi makers sneezed and was sniffling throughout his preparations of the sushi. We didn't see where he sneezed, but we kept a close eye on them after that. Otherwise, the chicken teriyaki was excellent tasting, and the yaki soba was good. We should have informed them about the foul smell; I don't think they were aware of it. Certainly not a quaint or luxurious restaurant if you're looking for a place with ambience and not the cleanest. Seems cramped, so not sure if it's truly wheelchair accessible. Tip: try to sit at the sushi bar if possible so as to watch them make your sushi.

Good place for. I've had their sushi and some main courses. All are worth the price and then some. Decent wine as well.

Sushi restaurants have recently become very popular. Tried many. This one stands out as the best. Very small, friendly staff, fresh ingredients with a large menu. Something for everyone, even those that don't enjoy sushi.
Good specials on specialty rolls and drinks throughout the week.
Our granddaughter even wanted to go there for her birthday when she turned 4!

Highly recommended!

After an exciting day downtown Des Moines, we went to celebrate our anniversary at Sakura Sushi. We both love sushi. This place did not disappoint. We had the yellowtail jalapeño appetizer, the Sakura roll, and lady lobster. All three dishes made you close your eyes and go umm umm good. Absolute must visit if you like sushi!
