“Historically Fun!”

Ellinwood Underground Tunnels
Reviewed 4 weeks ago via mobile

I've visited the Ellinwood tunnels more times than I can count. The first time was when I was about 7, the latest was about a year ago, 33 years later. Each time there have been updates and new information and something for anyone who may have an interest in early life on the Kansas plains.

Great place to spark your kids imagination- you get to learn the history of how Kansas was founded and see the original tunnels under the side walks preserved in parts as they were mid 1900s. A real insight into life on the Santa Fe trail back in the day.

It sounds crazy, but who knew underground businesses were once a thriving part of cowtown Kansas? Not for the mobility challenged, but if you can get up and down a primitive set of stairs, this tour is fun. Benches are available for a rest break. Come early and browse the antique store on the west side of Main Street. Wear decent shoes, no flipflops, to avoid stubbed toes.

I grew up 15 miles from Ellinwood but never knew of the Underground until our family did a tour 6 years ago. We went back last weekend and enjoyed it even more. A section of Underground has been opened across the street under the Wolfe Hotel. Wonderful tour and educational. Did you know that a number of towns had Undergrounds but this is the only one left.

Tour guide was extremely knowledgeable about the tunnels and town history. Tour was unhurried but be prepared for stairs
