Review of Pawnee Rock

Pawnee Rock
Reviewed 17 April 2017

Take your time, stretch your legs, and visit olde Pawnee Rock. Being the only hill with a vantage point in the region, it's easy to see why it holds significant American Indian and Settler significance. It's in a bit of a sad state, clearly the town of Pawnee Rock isn't able to care for this park the way they would like. But, regardless it's a good history lesson and also shows what happens when you take a natural resource (like the Buffalo were to this region) and completely destroy it.

It is a park with a view of the town where there were great views of buffalo 175 years ago. Nice spot for a picnic or a smoke.
Located right off the highway.

If you are on your way to Fort Larned, it's a nice side stop to better understand part of the Santa Fe Trail history. The natural rock outcropping (which used to be much taller) was a guide post for pioneer travelers.

We loved the history at this location. We wouldn't drive hours to get here, but if in the area a must see. Just imagine standing in that same spot years ago and watch the wagon trains and Indians. Wow!

I grew up around this area and used to love going up to the rock and watching the sun set. Such a beautiful view. I even thought about getting married here. My dad used to tell me stories about the indian's, how they used this area as a look out. You can see for miles on this hill. I always used to wish I could find an arrowhead. Nicely mowed and peaceful.
