“high point in Kansas”
Review of Pawnee Rock

Pawnee Rock
Reviewed 25 September 2017

There is not much here as this was a high point that travelers were guided by. But the building does has a spiral staircase to get to the top and you can see for miles. There is a monument and plaques that talks about the Indians who visited the site, the travelers who were happy to reach this place and what the rock meant to everyone that passed it.

Dad and Son (13) trip to New Mexico. Sam says "incredible view overlooking the Santa Fe Trail. Check it out". Dad here, many travelers have left there mark on the rocks, wonder how many actually got to their destination. A unique historical site. Well kept, not crowded.

Take your time, stretch your legs, and visit olde Pawnee Rock. Being the only hill with a vantage point in the region, it's easy to see why it holds significant American Indian and Settler significance. It's in a bit of a sad state, clearly the town of Pawnee Rock isn't able to care for this park the way they would like. But, regardless it's a good history lesson and also shows what happens when you take a natural resource (like the Buffalo were to this region) and completely destroy it.

It is a park with a view of the town where there were great views of buffalo 175 years ago. Nice spot for a picnic or a smoke.
Located right off the highway.

If you are on your way to Fort Larned, it's a nice side stop to better understand part of the Santa Fe Trail history. The natural rock outcropping (which used to be much taller) was a guide post for pioneer travelers.
