We loved our stay at the the General's Cabin. comfortable and homey, with impeccable attention to detail. Joy has a flair for interior design, and fresh flowers on the table when we arrived made us feel welcome.

We arrived after dark, and the windy road to the cabin was a challenge, but well worth the trip.

“Rustic Retreat”
Reviewed 18 November 2013 for a stay in November 2013

Cozy cabin in the woods near Natural Bridge/Red River Gorge. Very secluded and quiet setting. Beautiful private woods for hiking around the property.

We spent most of our time in the living room curled up by the gas fireplace reading. Very comfortable chair/ottoman and couch in there! One more reading lamp by the couch would have been ideal. A few downsides though: the king size bed was rather hard/uncomfortable and there didn't seem to be enough hot water (never got the water in the bathtub hotter than "warm"). Lighting in the master bath was also a little lacking (very dark in that tub with the shower curtain drawn).

The place is listed as having 3 bedrooms, but one "bedroom" is an open loft with 2 kid-size mattresses only, accessed by a ladder. I think one family with a few kids would be comfortable here, but couldn't see multiple families or couples staying here at once for space and privacy reasons. The entire cabin is open--meaning, the walls don't go to the ceiling in any room so sound really travels. Good to know/plan for if different people have different awake/sleep schedules.

There were lots of books (including local history & lore) and DVDs (no TV reception) as well as board games, which we enjoyed. Kitchen was well stocked with glass/dishware and basics (e.g. flour, sugar, condiments). We had good cell reception (Verizon) but there is no Wi-Fi (which is nice when you're trying to get away from it all actually!).

The owners were very prompt and helpful in their responses and materials provided. I really appreciated the set rate without any add-on fees (e.g. no separate cleaning fee) and the list of "check-out" items was very reasonable. Overall, we really enjoyed our stay!

Management Response

Sorry there were any issues with your stay. We only want our guests to have a peak experience. In regards to your concerns related to the cabin. We have placed as many lamps as possible throughout . Its poplar and oak interior have proved challenging, especially on overcast days.. On sunny days it is not really an issue, as the cabin is full of windows. We actually have super hot water, but had turned down the hot water tank after receiving a complaint from the last guests that it was too hot . If I had only known I could have easily walked you through the process of turning the water to your desired temp. The King mattress is hand tied and are the same ones used at all the state parks. We have had many compliments from past guests, but I know that when it comes to a mattress everyone has their preference. I do describe the cabin as "open" in my explanation, and there was no option on the drop down list for 2 bedrooms plus a loft. The designer of the cabin chose the open floor plan, and we tried to adhere to the integrity of the original design. Again, sorry for any inconvenience.
