Nice plantation to visit, and get the local history of how New Orleans was in the 1700's. Beautiful oak trees with the Spanish moss. If you are driving, you can hit several plantations on River Road. Laura and Oak Alley are others high on the list.

The history of this plantation is very fascinating, with the original owner being instrumental in Louisiana becoming a state. There’s an original document signed by Thomas Jefferson and James Madison, Secretary of State, giving Destrehan the authority to write the state constitution. The plantation recognizes the contributions and sad history of slavery on the land. Besides the main house, the buildings are fun to wander and get an idea of what life was like in the late 1700’s and 1800’s. And the giant live oak trees draped with Spanish moss are gorgeous to behold! Our tour guide was Jim and I highly recommend him! Incredibly knowledgeable and interesting.

Beautiful house, learned a lot about how plantations ran. Sad to see how poorly slaves were treated and considered lower than the livestock. The guide was very educational and answered all our questions thoroughly. Loved the tour

It was a great tour with lots of information and history. Beverly did an amazing job explaining everything and making us feel immersed in the experience. It's awesome to see the effort to provide the community and tourist an insight into the lives of those that lived on the plantation and its history.

My experience here was second to none. Our Historian/ Guide was Jim and he was absolutely fabulous. His knowledge, professionalism, and interest in the past and present of this plantation really shows. He truly knows what he’s talking about and went above and beyond for our group. Don was also very helpful and answered all my questions at the torchi and bousillage area (I was even allowed to get my hands dirty). I’d recommend this piece of history in a heart beat.
