Inn at Sunrise Point

I spent 2 nights at the Inn at Sunrise Point and it was absolutely magical. This is, without a doubt, the most impressive oceanfront property I've ever had the pleasure of visiting. The view of the bay is completely breathtaking.

We stayed in the Hopper Cottage and it was perfect. It was clean and bright and cozy. With the sounds of the ocean and such a comfortable bed, I can hardly think of a better night's sleep.

Eating breakfast is a pleasure too. The food is wonderful and of course, there's always that beautiful ocean view to enjoy. If you're looking for a romantic place to relax, this is the place.

"Instructions for living a life:
Pay attention.
Be astonished.
Tell about it."

So writes Mary Oliver in her poem "Sometimes," apt advice for experiencing the Inn at Sunrise Point in all of its shining perfection.

"Pay attention" to every detail carefully orchestrated by owner, Daina, and lifetime Mainer, Bonnie, by Autumn and Lois and Nancy ... from golden-brown, crispy-edged waffles that melt in your mouth to plush bathrobes and sumptuous bedding that you, in turn, melt into.  As you read a book on the cozy porch of the main inn or sun in Adirondack chairs on the lawn or curl up with a cup of coffee and a fresh-baked cookie in the glass conservatory, look up to see a bald eagle soaring from its treetop perch on the rocky shoreline and lobstermen checking their traps in the glistening waters of Penobscot Bay.

"Be astonished" that this place is miraculous.  If you show a preference for a particular beverage or toiletry item, it will magically replenish itself when you are out.  (The magic elves who catered to us in our room were so observant that, noticing we used more conditioner than shampoo, they started leaving extra conditioner each morning).  Return from dinner (side note: whatever you do, do NOT miss Primo!) to clean, scented towels, a full ice bucket, and chocolates on your pillow.  Wander over to the library and have Autumn prepare you an adult beverage, choose a DVD from the inn's wide selection to watch on the flat screen TV in your room, and return to light the fire already laid out in your fireplace.  The next morning, ask the always delightful Bonnie about a Maine custom or tradition or locale and be entertained by one of her stories and her astonishing knowledge of everything Maine.

"Tell about it."  My husband and I have enjoyed two long visits at the inn, both in the Richard Russo cottage, one for seventeen days in July 2009 and an eight-day stay in October-November 2010.  It's a lovely home-away-from-home in sea-greens and blues with a wood-burning fireplace and fabulous views, not to mention all of the modern amenities and conveniences.  We plan a third visit in the fall of 2011 and look forward to returning to "our inn" for many years to come.  We are not sporting types, but we know from talking to other guests (and just looking out the window) how many opportunities for sailing, hiking, biking, and exploring exist, and how eager Daina and her staff are to make recommendations and arrangements.  We come to relax and rest, browse shops and galleries, see the sights, enjoy the cuisine ... and again, Daina and her staff are more than helpful in pointing us in the right direction.  My husband recently joked, in one of our wistful conversations about when we can retire for good and where we'll live when we do: "I wonder how many years we could live in the Russo before our savings ran out!"  Sounds like a plan, so get ready, Daina ... in about fifteen years!

My wife and I recently had the pleasure of staying at the Inn at Sunrise point. The room and bath were large, fresh and immaculate. Almost every amenity you could think of was provided. The commom areas were as nice as the rooms. The location, just outside Camden, worked fine for exploring the area and being right on the bay was an added extra. After a day of exploring, a drink on the lawn or a stroll along the bay hit the spot. We travel a lot and I can say this is one of the fineist Inns we have found for all around comfort and quality.

Four of us stayed for 2 nights back in September, we had two rooms in the main inn. From the moment we arrived it felt like the weight of the world had fallen from our shoulders, I have never felt so relaxed. The welcome we received was outstanding the views breathtaking, the accommodation was one of the best we have ever stayed in and that includes some very up market hotels. Breakfast was a delight and the facilities on offer including the honesty bar were well stocked and very considerate. All the staff were wonderful. We loved it so much we are planning our next trip and can't wait.
