Spent my birthday weekend at the birches after some trepidation reading previous reviews. The cabin was rustic but comfortable with a propane heater in the bedroom and a wood stove in the living area. John and his staff were most helpful and the highlight was a plane ride with John taking off on the ice, incredible.Be aware this is not your holiday inn but if you are looking for a real touch of Maine and some adventure this is the place to be.

Our main goals were to ski, eat, and relax. All were accomplished in a short overnight stay. What a beautiful location on one of the most beautiful lakes in the state of Maine. The Birches has a deep history on Moosehead Lake and the current owners do a fantastic job of making themselves present and always available to guests, making you feel right at home; you'll sometimes even find them waiting on you for breakfast the next morning! We enjoyed miles and miles of pristinely groomed xc-ski trails that are all conveniently separate from the also extensive network of snowmobile trails in the area. We were able to ski along at our own pace knowing there would only be other skiers on the trails. Back at the lodge there was always a low bustle of snowmobilers coming in and out of the lodge to eat, rest, and fuel up with a beverage ;-) It made for a nice atmosphere and we enjoyed a few drinks ourselves by the giant stone fireplace which was nicely stocked with split wood. The dining experience (dinner and breakfast) were both delicious and fulfilling! We reserved a lodge room for convenience of being right in the midst of it all, however they offer many beautiful log cabins (we peaked in one before leaving), that I think we will definitely take advantage of next visit! We would recommend it to friends and family for a nice weekend or even mid-week getaway. We will be back t experience the Birches in another season... preferably one with less snow for now ;-)

Room Tip: Lodge rooms are right in the action, private cabins are quieter.

We always love stopping here while snowmobiling for a drink. The view of the lake is beautiful... there’s a nice fire... cozy couch and tables with a view. It’s even a gas stop!! I highly recommend that you make this a part of you visit.

May not be rich, but we felt like it for a while. This was a surprise party for my sixtieth birthday. My Son in law and my daughter and the Birches Staff were all in on it.To make a long story short, I've been to the Birches many times for dinner. It is the most amazing feeling being there, You are in Gods country but feel secure and the people are WONDERFUL. I cannot get over these people moaning and groaning about something minor but they have to complain about something . The Birches is not a motel six, if you want that you are in the wrong neck of the woods. Every hour i spend at the Birches is a moment cherished in my life , THAT's my two cents , THANK YOU the BIRCHES

Room Tip: adjacent boat dock

We had a fabulous getaway weekend at the Birches! It is such a special place. Peaceful, relaxing and so much fun! We took long walks, enjoyed the hot tub outside, and relaxed in the bar. The restaurant service was over the top and the food was excellent from breakfast thru dinner. I especially liked hanging out in the Lodge by the fire playing games with friends while laughing our heads off. Highly recommend it!!!
