Just spent three nights in room 206 of the main building while in town for a wedding. We had some concerns based on recent reviews, but found that the property seems to be in the middle of upgrading itself. We observed lots of new carpet and an absence of mold that others reported. The location is great, downtown but in a relatively quiet spot near the water. The staff was very helpful. Our room was ready at 1:00 despite a 3:00 check in time. Beds were comfortable, room clean, HVAC worked well. Bathroom was clean but really needs renovating/updating. TV worked but picture was pretty bad. Muffins and coffee (Starbucks) were nice in the am; never got to try the cookies since we were never at the hotel at 7 pm.

I am just finishing a five day visit to Edgartown and my stay at The Kelley House. The traditions have returned to The Kelley House which is under new management. Joanne and her team work hard to ensure your time with them is perfect. The entire facility has been refurbished as work continues on a pool side bar area. I've enjoyed my time here, a pace I have visited for nearly twenty years. Good job Joanne.

Room tip: Ask for a quiet area

We have booked a room with two double beds with "Sleep Number by Select Comfort mattress" as it was advertised on hotels.com and several other websites (Expedia, booking.com) We have these very mattresses, so I was very happy to find a place where we could sleep like at home. Big let down! Not only they did not have Sleep Number mattresses, the front desk lady had no idea what I was talking about, stating that possibly their mattresses are made by Select Comfort (like a hundred years ago), and also that she has no power over what they put on the internet. "Free area shuttle" they advertise was a public MV bus (that is not free!)Air conditioner in the room would not cool it below 80 degrees, so we slept with our windows open. Oh, and if you are looking for breakfast at this bed and breakfast, it is just a muffin. That's all. I am not sure where management got the pictures but the hotel we stayed looked nothing like that. Look at travelers' pictures and see all the stains in the carpet and peeling wall paper in the halls. We have stayed at Motel 6, and we have stayed at Sandals resort. I understand you get what you paid for, but this was a huge let down... Very disappointed.

When I called to book a room at the Kelley House, I asked for a quiet room in the main hotel. I was told I would get a corner room on the third floor. However, when we checked in, we were told that there had been problems with their computer, and that room was already taken. They upgraded us to a suite, which was actually a room in one of their other buildings. We were in the Chappy House, and even had a porch with a water view. The suite was nice, but could use renovation. The front desk staff was wonderful, especially Zach. He went out of his way to make sure we had everything we needed, and he took extra time with us to tell us about things to do on the island. We especially enjoyed the beautiful fireplace in the main lobby, the muffins in the morning, and the delicious chocolate chip cookies every evening. I would definitely stay there again - it was like coming "home" after each day's activities.

We booked three days at the Kelley House in Edgartown, Martha's Vineyard this coming August 2015; one of the last room available, if not the last. This was two weeks or so ago. Then we learned we could find passage with our car on the ferry from Woods Hole to Martha's Vineyard but that the return trip date was full so we could not get back to mainland when we had to.

My wife called the Kelley House with regrets that we would have to cancel our stay only to be told that the Kelley House would charge us $100 for the cancellation. This despite the fact that our cancellation is three months in advance of our hoped for visit and the reason for the cancellation is beyond our control. My wife, who made the reservation does not recall being told there would be a fee for a cancellation so far in advance; she was told of other fees for cancellation closer to our planned visit.

A charge of $100 for a cancellation three months in advance of our visit is motivated by nothing else but pure Kelley House greed and profiteering. It is not motivated by any expense or even inconvenience incurred by the Kelley House and it does not leave the Kelley House an unreasonably short time to have the room reserved again. We have travelled over much, if not most of this world, and the Kelley House Response is unique an example of a greedy, callous policy of pure self interest. I would caution any traveller against making a reservation with a company like the Kelley House. It is not the money but the principle of what the policy stands for that is at issue. You are better off to go elsewhere and stay elsewhere on Martha's Vineyard, in more respects than one!
