I love this location- on a small river with a waterfall. You can eat and listen to the sound of rushing water which makes for a relaxing atmosphere. My complaint about the Alvah Stone is that their menu is very limited (especially for dinner). But the food itself is very good once you make a selection. I stopped for Sunday brunch and had a delicious meal. Blackened fish sandwich was delicious with a side of miso slaw (super yummy). A nice herbal iced tea rounded the meal out. Very pleasant server named Jessie made this a lovely brunch.

The food was good--generous portions. Maybe the best quiche I have ever had. If it's a nice day, sit outside. It's beautiful!

When I was in college, I viewed all dates to fall in the category of either very enjoyable or interesting. You can learn something from every situation, even if it isn't something you are inclined to do again. Unlike our last visit here two years ago, the dining experience was not one we would be in a hurry to replicate. The menu and the combination of flavors are more experimental than traditional. We are often pleased to try new combinations, ethnic cuisines we are not familiar with, and/or support chefs who are doing things differently. Still, at this price point, we would prefer more of the experiments to succeed. Strong seasoning is no substitute for finesse.

Our starters, a kale salad and a braised carrot salad were not bashful; kudos for using sumac in the latter, although the feta cheese in the sauce was minuscule and the pistachios mostly for texture. The kale salad was almost overpowered by the salad dressing, but then again, would have been quite boring without it.

The main courses let us down. The chef insisted on using aged provolone with the gnocchi. Aging doesn't make the provolone any less forgettable. A poached cod is about as appealing as egg whites. A fiery sauce somewhere in the coconut corn broth, sticky rice and thai basil just added plenty of heat and no light.

Two recommended desserts were passable, but not commendable.

The outdoor dining area is attractive, the service friendly and the wine list somewhat intriguing. But they are nowhere near the top of our list of places to savor a sophisticated meal north or south of Springfield.

We had a quiet lunch. Sandwiches and salad. Love bologna, ham & salami. Will go back. The Book Mill is one of our favorite places.

We were biking in the Montague area and some fellow bikers recommended this gem for a break. It turned out to be an excellent restaurant with very good food. We are always looking for plant based food and The Alvah Stone has a great selection. In addition, we enjoyed the patio sitting area with a great overlook on the waterfall.
