“Home to award-winning whoopee pies”

This café, in The Tannery Marketplace, touts itself as the home of the Whoopie Pie. These words are not taken lightly in New England, where many an argument can spring up as to who ‘owns’ this dessert - “a US baked product that may be considered either a cookie, pie or cake” - which consists of two round cakes glued together with flavoured cream, like an inflated cookie. Pennsylvania, Maine, New Hampshire & Massachusetts all vie for ownership, while Maine claims a victory in naming it the official state treat.
This café scratch-bakes them with no trans fats and at only 130-160 calories each - with a gluten-free selection also available - it's no wonder they are award-winning. While I’m not known for having a sweet tooth, I was given chocolate with raspberry cream and it passed inspection with flying colours.

Julie and Alan are amazing! They have truly established a great friendly, relaxing cafe spot in the amazing town of Newburyport. Their coffee and chai tea are EXCELLENT. Their service is excellent. Their Cafe is excellent. Their whoopie pies, EXCELLENT. They also provide continental breakfast for businesses, which I ordered after stopping in for Chai and whoopie pies. That was EXCELLENT and the staff loved the mixed pastries and box of coffees. Can't recommend them enough. It's a must stop while visiting Newburyport!

A great place to meet a friend for morning tea. I go here every month or so. I can't eat grains, so unfortunately can't comment on the breakfast offerings, but they have a fabulous selection of teas and coffees. It is located at the Tannery, so there are lots of shops to stroll through (definitely check out Wishbasket), and the farmers market on Sundays during the summer.

After really enjoying their whoopie pies on our last visit we decided to buy some more. We actually bought 8 because their website said they would keep in the refrigerator for 8 days however after just a few days the filling in 4 of them has discolored and hardened. Also the chocolate cake has started to go a bit stale. Their website also said they could be frozen for up to 2 months so I emailed them a few days ago to ask if freezing might resolve the problem but they haven't responded.
For the price I would have expected the quality to be more consistent.

After trying a few really awful whoopie pies I was a bit reluctant to try these, especially as they are quite expensive, however I was persuaded to and Wow, they really were good. Definitely the best I've ever tried.
The reason for 4 stars instead of 5 was that the lady at the counter wasn't exactly welcoming.
