Just returned from a weekend at this rental. Was very disappointed. The house is very musty and damp and the musty smell is in all the furniture, bedding, pillows, rugs, etc. Opened windows to air it out. Despite having screens on the windows, clusters of gnats accumulated on the ceilings of all the bedrooms. Had to use a broome to try to get rid of them and had to keep the windows closed for the remainder of the stay.
The house is in need of repairs and upgrades. The beds and mattresses are old and supported with wood boards. There is no door on the room with the King bed, just sliding shutters which do not fit from Wall to wall. When they are pulled shut, they close in the middle and slide away from the walls on each end, which results in large gaps and openings and no privacy, and this room is part of the living room.
I would not recommend renting and staying at this house.
I'm really not sure how this place has so many 5 star reviews. Perhaps it's the location, but once you get inside the place, it's musty, not the cleanest, dated, and worn. Which is ok, but that's not what the pictures make it seem like. I know the owner mentioned she has somebody come clean, but based off of the dead bugs and Misc. items on the floor, I'm not sure that's the case. The rooms are tiny, with ceilings that make it impossible to stand up in more than half of it. I get thus is a house in the woods, but for the price, I would expect more. The owner also gave us a hard time when we talked to her about the many, many gnats that were in the bedrooms.
We stayed in the Berkshire Farmhouse during our winter school break as a large group of 9 with adults and children (including teenagers). Very comfortable, clean, cozy and warm house with everything you need to spend several days away; felt like home away from home. Elaine is very hospitable and approachable; made sure everything we needed was there. I loved that towels and linens were included; less to worry about. Perfect location close to Great Barrington, Stockbridge, Lenox, Pittsfield. We had a chance to ski and just enjoy the amenities of the house and many nearby attractions. I would like to come here again in the Summer or Fall.
We are 4 women in our 70's and 80"s who have been going away together for one week a year for the past 33 years. This year we decided to go to the Berkshires. The Berkshire Farmhouse was perfect for us. We like to hike, cook, read and catch up with each other. The house is very well stocked which made cooking a pleasure, It even had a coffee grinder which was very important to me. Our host, Elaine Hoffman was wonderful. She told us about places to hike brought us flowers and fruit from her garden. She had the perfect combination of being there when we wanted information but not intrusive (Her pottery studio is a ways behind the property). I loved sitting and reading on the screened in porch. There was so much to see and do, we hope to go back again next year.
Great farmhouse in a great location. The house is very clean, comfortable and well equipped especially the kitchen. Convenient to Tanglewood, Stockbridge and Lenox. Perfect for a large family. Elaine is a very gracious and helpful host. We would be delighted to visit again. Be sure to check out the beautiful and colorful pottery in her nearby gallery.
