Our family has been going to Scotty's for many years. They have spoiled us with their delicious fish and chips. Every other restaurant is compared to Scotty's and none ever match up. It's the best. It's family owned and run - the nicest people ever!

This is one of the best fish and chip dinners that I have ever been to. It has been around for a very long time. The staff is great, friendly and helpful. The dinning room is close quarters makes for a more family friendly situation. The prices are med range.

The decor looks like it hasn't changed in 40 years and the neighborhood has seen better days, but was still packed on a Friday night. Good fish. Had the perch. Was nicely battered.

Found this place on a Facebook post -- "Eater Detroit" (best places for Fish & Chips) -- so we gave it a try. And it didn't disappoint! Although they have a decent menu (fish, shrimp, perch, frog legs, chicken, beef, soup), being our first time there, we had to try the Fish & Chips. Excellent! Good, light batter on fresh cod, which they say is flown in daily from Halifax, Nova Scotia. And for the more healthy conscious folks, they have grilled and baked fish as well.

Although it looks like they do more of a carry-out business, they do have a good size dining area to eat in. It's been a Detroit landmark since 1950, and probably never had any renovations to it. So it's dated, but not dingy, and that's part of the charm. The neighborhood might keep people away, but you're not going to Scotty's for the scenery. Don't let that keep you from trying it.

Oh, and cash only! No credit/debit cards.

Remember that early scene in "Back to the Future" when Marty McFly stammered and stumbled through the diner and realized he was stuck in the 1950s? If that film had taken place in Detroit, I'm certain Marty would've found himself at Scotty Simpson's Fish and Chips.

Formica tables, stereotypical diner plates and glasses, the walls plastered with memorabilia. This place is a near-complete throwback. And that's a good thing. Dated, yes. Dingy, no.

Enjoy the atmosphere and the super-bubbly staff and feast on some of the best fish (cod) and chips in the Midwest. The other seafood offerings, smelt and shrimp for instance, are feast-worthy as well. For those who are particular about their chips (fries), vinegar is on every table.

In business since 1950, Scotty Simpson's off the beaten path on Fenkell (AKA Five Mile Road) tucked into Detroit's west side. This isn't downtown, Corktown, Midtown, etc., and it's worth the trip, especially for those who have already experienced the city's more familiar areas.

And the price is right. Our bill for three adults -- dinner and dessert -- was under $50. Bring cash. Credit cards aren't accepted.
