When a favourite restaurant changes hands is can be a recipe for disaster but . . . .

The Troubadour has surpassed all our expectations so it is brilliant to have a fairly local restaurant serving good food to an excellent standard.

When we have visitors the Troubadour is often our choice for a lunch or evening meal because we know it will be fine. The choice of menu is varied, the house wines are good and the setting is beautiful.

Having owned a house near Hautefort for 7 years it is fantastic that a quality restaurant is in the village. It was our first visit here with parents and as they say first impression counts. Warm welcome spacious dining area and the nicest meal we've had in a long time. We immediately booked for the following night when our daughter and friends arrive.

We recently had lunch here and this was a very pleasant experience.

We were welcomed by the charming lady owner and sat at our table. We were given the menu's and wine list, which is rather small but I found a nice Chablis to start with. The place was fully booked and there was a nice vibe.

From the three course menu 'Formule du Seigneur' I chose the Foie Gras de Canard to start with, which was very nice. For a main I took the Ris de Veau aux Shittaquets. Also good, but not the style I expected. We combined this with a lovely local red Bergerac as recommended by Madame. The desert, 'Sablé Breton, was disappointing: plain, simple, and moreover tasteless. A pity.

But, all in all, we were very pleased by this cosy, little restaurant.

Walk through the large port at Château Hautefort to the old town and the first restaurant you come across the the Troubadour with a covered well just outside - a very pretty scene which could be out of Disney's Beauty and the Beast.

We are a family of 6: 2 adults 2 teens and 2 children. We mainly chose from the €22 menu for two courses. There was a board with a €14 menu however it was blank?

Menus all had brief English translations which the children appreciated although they all used their best French when ordering

We ordered 4 x duck breast on a bed of sautéed potatoes a la orange. One burger with mushroom and fois gras and one veal and morel mushrooms on a bed of potato - everyone was a winner on flavour and presentation

To finish walnut cake (amazing), sorbets and also their own caramelised bake.

Quality and service was first class. English is spoken if your French vocabulary doesn't stretch far enough.

Booked on the back of TripAdvisor reviews and careful study of the menu. We had the €28 3-course menu and everyone enjoyed the quality of the food. Welcome was warm, service (from Amelie) was attentive and the food was excellent. With two bottles of wine and one bottle of sparkling water, the bill was a very reasonable €70 per couple, which is excellent value for a very good meal.

Note: very easy parking is available in the Chateau car park, then a two-minute walk down through the castle gate into town. Saves negotiating the narrow lanes of Hautefort itself.
