The Suites Hotel in Canal Park
Ranked #17 of 31 Hotels in Duluth
Reviewed 9 August 2017

We scheduled our last night of travels to be on the Canal Park in Duluth and this Hotel looked great. The staff at the front desk was very friendly and gave good information. The hotel is on just the first 4 floors with the upper floors privately owned. There is a nice pool, a kiddie pool, and a nice hotel tub & sauna. The hotel provides an "Adult Only" swim time at night from 10-11pm.

It should be noted that many of the rooms are on the interior with no windows. To have a window costs a bit more. The hotel is about 100 yards long...and so are the hallways to the only set of elevators. The hotel offers a free drink next door at the pub.

The hotel also includes a free hot/cold breakfast in the lobby, but seating is very limited. Don't wait until the end of the breakfast time to get food as the line is very long.

The rooms are nice and give that "old warehouse" feel from the early 20th century.

However, there downside was also the room. The maid left dirty towels in the bathroom, a trash can that had old trash and cosmetics in it, and absolutely no toilet paper. Staff were quick to come with toilet paper and to empty our trash, but it makes you wonder if they did a good cleaning. Speaking of cleaning, the drop ceilings in the bathroom are rusty and many pieces of furniture are nicked and veneer is chipped off. We were charged for the room safe but the key codes did not work and it was not available for us to use. Parts of the room looked as if they had not been cleaned in a year or more.

The hotel is about 20 years old but it needs a good facelift. It is the kind of hotel that has great appeal and history, but needs management that looks to do a major cleaning of one room a day for a year. We also had to report broken glass in the carpet outside our suite which nearly cut one foot on the walk to the pool.

Overall the staff was friendly and helpful. The rooms were tired and in need of a good upgrade. the bed was extremely nice.

The hot breakfast was very good.

Room Tip: Try to get a view of Canal park or else you only see a parking lot.

Located 1-1/2 blocks from the start of the 5K and the pickup for the Marathon. Approximately 3 blocks from Marathon finish. Rooms were clean, spacious, and quiet. I would have rated this 5 stars, but the cooking utensils were very minimal. I suggest taking cooking supplies if you can. Free parking!

My biggest complaint is the noise. I travel a lot for work and plenty personally so I have been to many hotels and this was by far the loudest. Several people I know had the same experience at different times as well. One reason may be cause of the strange room layout. There is a window in the bedroom that is next to a hallway. So not only is it loud, it is impossible to get it completely dark... The shower is the next problem. The shower head is probably only 5 feet up. I am 5'9" and had to duck to get under the water. So if you are taller than 5 feet plan on sitting down or ducking the whole time. The bed was one of the most uncomfortable beds I have slept on and finally the price is not cheap. The room was nearly $200 a night (at a discount). I cannot imagine how they stay in business other than the location and people have to stay somewhere. It all fairness it is good for kids and families as it has a decent pool and is in a good location and also comes with a decent free breakfast.

Room Tip: Sleep somewhere else

We stayed here because the hotel was within walking distance of the All Pints North Beer Festival. It's a nice location, close to parks and restaurants. Parking was included (no additional charge). Room nice and clean. Breakfast was good (also included), nothing great, but solid and included many options (cereal, eggs, potatoes, waffles, fruit and yogurt).

Price was fair for location ($200 for a Saturday in July with an inside room/booked on TripAdvisor). I think in general most hotels are overpriced in this location, but I understand it's just the going rate.

Lastly, hotel staff was very friendly and helpful.

We were attending a music festival at Bayfront Park and this hotel was within walking distance. It was an inside room with no windows, but it was dark at night and quiet which made sleeping much easier. Very good breakfast with cereal, pastries/toast, waffles, yogurt, hard boiled and scrambled eggs and hash browns. They had the best price deal for Canal Park in the Summer -- would definitely stay here again!
