Stayed here for 2 nights with my daughter over New Years. Despite it being New Years Eve AND the Vikings game, as well as other games, the hotel rooms were quiet and we got excellent sleep. We had a room with no view a few feet from an office building, but that may have been to our benefit. I heard people in the lobby say they heard sirens all night, which we definitely did not.

Room was comfortable, with tons of storage space. There were several lamps, but it was still rather dark with all the lights on, even during a bright day with all the shades open (as I said earlier, our room looked directly into another building, so no direct sunlight). The bathroom was almost as big as the bedroom! Everyone writes about the soaking tub, and it WAS nice, but not quite as big and fancy as they make it sound. Our tiny house built in 1930 has the same size tub.

I appreciate that they are reducing waste by providing soap, shampoo, etc., in big bottles. However, they were bolted in and a bit far from the sink and a little difficult to dispense due to the bolting mechanism. Also, there was no shampoo by the tub, and you couldn't bring any over.

As usual, the fancier the hotel, the more you have to pay for everything! There is no coffee maker in the room, and free coffee is in the lobby for only a few hours in the morning. Although the wifi is free, you need to pay to use the business center for everything except printing boarding passes. They have sundries for sell at inflated prices in the room, while I get similar stuff included in the room rate at Red Roof Inn! Luckily, you are in a city center. Target, coffee shops and more are just a short walk away. Even in the sub-zero temperatures, things were close enough to be able to walk to without getting very cold.

Some of the staff did not know much about what was nearby or how to get places, but they were all very pleasant and willing to look things up or ask their colleagues. All staff we encountered throughout the building were friendly and courteous.

The location is very close to the light rail and the building is connected to the Skywalk, so no need to be outside for long in frigid temperatures. The Nicollet Mall (outdoors) is also a short walk away. Because we were there over New Years, a lot of the restaurants and stores were closed, but we still enjoyed the walk and artwork along the mall.

We did not use the attached gym. Because it is an athletic club, rather than a hotel gym and pool, it is not open as late as a traditional hotel gym and pool would be. The pool is for lap swimming, so not a place for kids to use, for better or worse.

If you are traveling with a family, this is probably not the ideal hotel. Everything costs extra, it doesn't have breakfast included, etc. But for business or adults, it is a quiet and well-maintained place with more character and individuality than a typical chain hotel.

Want to print something? That'll cost you. Need wi-fi? That'll cost you. Forget your toothpaste? That'll cost you ($6 at the mini bar). I always find it amusing when you stay at a upper mid level hotel and then EVERYTHING costs extra. The hotel room was really nice, but the view was of an atrium with other hotel rooms a few feet away. The bar downstairs was nice. I just can't get over the costs for everything. I forgot my toothpaste and they wanted $6 for one of the small tubes at the mini bar. I needed to print something and the business center was "down" and a print was like $2. I stayed at the Radisson Blu down the street a few weeks earlier and it was like half the price, just as nice, and they didn't charge for every little thing.

One thing to note... there's no place to eat breakfast here before 9am or so. They don't own/run the restaurant on property so you have to go up the street for breakfast.

Room Tip: Stay somewhere else if you value your money

Hi Calvin E, I am sorry you left feeling this way from your experience at The Grand. Did you happen to connect with any of our Guest Experience Agents during your stay? Rare Steak & Sushi, the second floor restaurant, is open daily at 7am CST for breakfast and we also have 24/7 Room Service that are available for breakfast options. Additionally, we have a fantastic program we advertise in our bathrooms (Forgot it, We got it!) that includes a list of 25+ items we have complimentary at the front desk - toothpaste & toothbrush included! Really, anything you may have forgot, we have it! Lastly, we have a great rewards program that lets you raid our mini bar ($10!). I hope you give us another try soon - we have a fantastic team ready to take care of you and we look forward to your return visit.

Take care,
Mike

Full disclosures (1) I am a Kimpton loyalist and (2) I have been staying at this hotel frequently since BEFORE it was a Kimpton.

This place is absolutely awesome.

Staff: phenomenal. Take the trouble to get to know you and your preferences.

Rooms: good. This is an old athletic club converted to a hotel. The rooms are funky and sometimes a little weird. I like them; others may find them to be a little bit bizarre.

Athletic facility: among the best you’ll find at a hotel outside of Las Vegas. Since the place used to be an athletic club, and since it is now attached to a signature Lifetime Fitness, it is pretty comprehensive, with a great cardio and strength floor, squash courts basketball, running track, spin, yoga, etc.

Ask for a coffee maker if you want one in the room — Kimpton’s green approach typically doesn’t provide them.

Big fan.

We stayed at the centrally located Kimpton Grand Hotel on December 27th. We stay at this property every time we visit Minneapolis (monthly). We get the luxury suite when the kids come with us, and a standard room when we travel as a couple. There is plenty of space, hospitality and luxury so that you enjoy your time away from home. They are pet friendly too!
