My boyfriend and I travel and camp a lot so when we travelled to Malaysia, a night in the rain forest was a no-brainer. We are not fussy people and fully expect to be pummelled by bugs, no wi-fi and endless rain. We are used to roughing it out, but we decided to splurge on this experience. We booked the Glass box 1 for the first night and mud hut for the second night. While I think the idea of this place is appealing, the execution is cheaply done.
Our glass box had dirty sheets, dead bugs were simply swept the the corner of or room, and the amenities were sparse. The outdoor shower was unkempt an mouldy, the light was not working so we had to use our own torch.
The mud hut smelled so damp and the smell clung to our clothes. Again, the bathroom was mouldy, the floors blackened with dirt and the finishing of the structure itself was shabby - plastic bags and tape to cover up holes.
No towels were provided and when we asked for them, the staff acted surprised as to why we would need them.
There are no amenities to speak of - bar a small fridge.
The environment was loud throughout the night with rich teenagers using the "retreat" as a party spot.
They staff are stand-offish.
They gates shut at 10 pm and when we wanted to leave to explore or go for dinner, the staff kept reminding us that they will not open the gate if we broke curfew.
The pool area has no places to sit, except metal-cage-type postmodern looking excuses for "chairs" that felt like sitting on barbed wire.
Overall, the concept of this place is so damn good, the location - stunning! But what they've made out of it isn't even worth half of the price they are charging. Save your ringgits and spend it on a fancy hotel.
