Reviewed 7 October 2011

For 2 weekends in mid-September the Gasthaus Bavarian Hunter throws a great Oktoberfest party! There is great german food, pretzels, and bier. Of course the is plenty of gemutlichkeit and dancing also! Friday & Saturday night is not for the kids but they do a family oriented day on Sunday.

“Good Bavarian bier & atmosphere; food quality varies”
Reviewed 31 July 2011

OK, GBH is not the authentic local gasthaus' I've been to in Germany and Austria but I think they do a decent job overall. The building, grounds and atmosphere definitely makes you feel like you're nestled in the rolling hills of a pine forest somewhere in Bavaria. GBH landscape had lovely flower gardens and even a string of Bavarian hops growing. Inside were lots of German sayings, steins and plates on the walls. They have a front patio to dine on but it was to hot outside when we were there. We sat at a window booth in the back room with good view of 2 large goats grazing and 2 really big chickens for entertainment.

Their bar has the major German beer groups covered with pilsners, dark lagers, weisses and seasonal bocks and Octoberfests. The option of 1/3, 1/2 and full liter mugs is a plus. We had the Spaten and Paulaner. (Too late I noticed their special beer list included a Steigl beer, which I drank a lot in Austria.) Happy hour is daily from 4 -6 PM; $1.50 off 1/2 liter imports.

The Goulasch soup had a tasty tomato base with chunks of pork in it. Their dark rye pumpernickel had a nice hard crust with good caraway/fennel seed flavor. I orderd Schweinshaxe - roasted pork hock, it was crispy on the outside but the meat was still tender inside. The gravy was good; the mashed potatoes OK. The sauerkraut was a nice surprise. A little soggy but had excellent flavor and was actually greenish like real homemade saurkraut instead of the bleached-white canned and refrigerated saurkraut you find everywhere these days.

We also ordered the Jagerschnitzel - breaded pork cutlet in a rich mushroom sauce, with potato dumplings and red cabbage. The cutlet was not fork tender and came covered in a sauce that seemed too thick and heavy. The dumpling's were rather rubbery compared to lighter ones we've had in Germany but the red cabbage was some of the best we've had.

Our waitress was friendly and accommodating. The portions are huge, so we had plenty for lunch the next day. GBH food seems to range from excellent to poor depending upon which entree or sidedish you order. I would definitely go back and give a couple of their other dishes a try; but not the dumplings or breaded pork cutlet entrees. If nothing else just hit Happy Hour to sit on the deck, drink good German bier and enjoy the Bavarian atmosphere. Maybe luck out and have an Oompah band playing polka music.

“I will not come back to this place!”
Reviewed 16 April 2011

I had forgotten how bad the food was last time we were at this place. I was hungry for German food. The menu sounded so authentic. I fell for the trap again!
I had the Bavarian favorite plate with jaeger and rahmputten schnitzel. The Jaeger schnitzel was very salty, dry and tough like leather! The rahmputten had salty coating , with a bland sourcream sauce. I had better food at a truck stop cafe for a fraction of the cost!!!. The restaurant surrounding and service are nice.

“Food is disappointing, beer is great”
Reviewed 21 September 2010

I've visited the Gasthaus for many years now, and always come away wondering why they don't put more effort into preparing and serving better quality food. The last time I ate there, the weiner schnitzel seemed like it was prepared from a frozen cutlet. The vegetables almost certainly were frozen. Very disappointing, especially for the price.

Why don't they take the time (and effort) to prepare their own food using a local chef?
