The Mississippi Delta is one of my favorite places on earth--stunning natural landscapes, friendly people, and culture that just doesn't quit. It's hard to say what visitors should "do" when they visit the Delta: driving around, talking to people, and taking in the history and the culture, much of which is painful American history, is what is important and what makes a visit so special. Fans of the blues already know about the Delta, but people with an interest in civil rights will also find much of interest if they visit places like Money, Sumner, Tutwiler, and Clarksdale. To understand America requires a visit to the Delta, and I hope that many of you will do it!

When I think of southern farming, I think of cotton. Driving through northern Louisiana, the southeast tip of Arkansas and on into Mississippi, we were a little disappointed that the rows and rows of vegetation we saw was not cotton. Soybean is now king in the Delta, with some corn crops thrown in there. From talking to the local people, cotton is now farmed in west Texas (I see another road trip in our future!).

You can travel Hwy-16 north and south or Hwy-82 east and west. The delta starts north of Vicksburg to Walnut MS (just south of Memphis) and from Greenwood MS to the Mississippi River. With a little internet search you can discover many Native American site and names. The primary industry is agriculture but we also have several colleges and universities. Many of the towns have community colleges or satellite campus from the larger schools. Most towns and communities have cultural festival yearly. Indian mounds and Blues music site (museums). Many country music, blues, rock and other genre grew and or developed in the delta.

The Mississippi Delta is full of things to do and places to eat. The Black Rodeo is coming to Jackson, Ms. B.B. King Museum is an exciting place to visit. Leroy State Park and Glen Allen park are great places to visit.
