I visited with a group of seven ladies and all of us had a delicious meal. Some order the schnitzel, some ordered the salmon, one had a filet and the rest had the Sauerbraten. Portions are large and sides are great! All was cooked to perfection and we were stuffed and satisfied on our way out the door.

Stone Hill is the most popular winery in Herman, so there are always tons of people waiting to visit the restaurant there. Be prepared to put your name on the list and wait. They had limitations on their wines they serve by the glass and a very limited beer selection. The food was fine, but nothing close to authentic, and the portions were relatively small. You can find better options somewhere else in Herman. By the way, they serve wine tastings in plastic... low class. It appears they are doing things on the cheap, which is disappointing.

Ambiance and food very good. Same for the wine. Our booth was in a horse stall in the old carriage house. We really enjoyed the Bavarian Pretzel Sticks. And the French Onion soup was really good--a little surprising for a German restaurant. We also really enjoyed the Pork Schnitzel and the Chicken Schnitzel. We were just too full to try the desserts, but they really looked good. Would have given an excellent rating except for service. Young staff were very friendly and helpful, and in fairness it was a Friday night on a football weekend at nearby Missouri, but we were seated 15 minutes after our reservation, waited exactly 20 minutes for our overworked server to appear and another 15 minutes plus for drinks and then a lengthy wait for our meals. All in all a very nice place but not a fine dining experience that should take almost 3 hours to complete. We had fun and will go back but knowing we should have nothing else planned for the evening.

Stopped at the winery next door for a tour and tasting...enjoyable. Went next door for lunch...what a flop!

I gotta preface this review by saying our experience may have been a fluke because we had heard so many good recommendations. However, with zero apologies from the staff, I need to mention this.

The problem, waiting an hour for the food to arrive. Yep, an hour. We literally saw a full turnover of patrons during that time. At least six other couples were seated after us, and all were served lunch. All we ordered were salads and a soup. Yes, the soup did arrive earlier, but that was it. The lone server occasionally would say the food was coming. Yeah, well, so was Christmas.

Anyway, we called it quits after people seated 45 minutes AFTER us were served their full meal. We walked to the register to pay for my soup just as our salads were exiting the kitchen. I don't believe it was the server's fault. They were understaffed.

I requested to talk to a manager but the two employees handling the register, while avoiding all eye contact, just mumbled under their breath, "ummm. well, um...." as they failed to answer my request. They even had the audacity to make us wait to pay for the soup because "...the computer is slow."

Again, I'd like to think this was a fluke, but maybe its an indicator something needs attention.

We were looking for a German Gashouse lunch experience. This was very close in esthetics and food; a winery on top of the hill with the dinning area in the old stable.
FOOD: a very nice menu selection of German options.
SERVICE: A friendly wait staff that worked well together.
ATMOSPHER: A rustic old horse stable, sitting on top of a hill, and with the wine makers busy harvesting and soring grapes.
VALUE: A very good choice
