An upscale casual atmosphere with the best burger and fries in the St. Louis area! The cost is on the spendier side but well worth it.

I was a fan of Reeds from day one but I’ve noticed that it’s now pretty much overpriced for very basic ingredients used to create what appears to be an extravagant dish. Portions are sparse both wine & meal prep.

A friend recommended trying Reeds while we were staying overnight in Saint Louis. Located in Maplewood on Manchester Road, it is easy to find and access off I-44 (via Southwest Blvd) or I-64 (via Big Bend Blvd). The setting is upscale casual with two levels of dining area. There is a bar with a broad variety of liquors and the wine list has good variety and quality (note check the full bottle list on the website not the short list to see options). The menu has recognizable ingredients, but in interesting combinations. There is a prix fixe option, which we used. For the first course we had crispy baby octopus, white beans, chorizo, chermoula & lemon (very good) and roasted mushrooms, oyster & shiitake mushrooms, carrot, forbidden rice, sriracha, & carrot-cardamom cream (good, but small portion). For the second course we each had the 7 ounce strip steak with tomato confit, smoked fingerling potatoes, ramp butter, green onions, watercress & black garlic vinaigrette - perfectly prepared and with a savory combination. For the ending course we had honey chamomile panna cotta, poached apricots, chamomile, wine reduction & pistachio (very enjoyable) and hazelnut pudding, chocolate sauce, hazelnuts & blackberries (disappointing and a bit bland relative to the rest of the meal). When we come back through Saint Louis we will consider Reeds as a dining option.

The service at this restaurant was excellent but the food was just ok. We started with a cheese plate, which was fabulous and then moved on to the octopus appetizer. From this point on, we found the food to be terribly salty. I had the chicken dish for my main meal and it's chicken wrapped in homemade pasta, kinda like a ravioli, except the pasta was folded on the ends instead of crimped. This lead the pasta on the ends to be hard/underdone. The sauce was tasty with a mushroom base, leeks, cream and fresh parsley but again, was overly salty. I couldn't finish it due to the salt. My husband had the steak and asked for it medium but it came out medium well. The sauce on top of the steak tasted like a slightly elevated A1. The flavors were great so if the salt were cut in half, it would have been a lot better.

As for the ambiance, we sat at the windows and while we would have initially preferred a table I'm glad we were on the end since the noise level was so high. It's a small, narrow restaurant so the acoustics aren't great. However, the service was great.

We shared 3 small plates and each one was better than the last! Brussel sprouts were fantastic was well as the shrimp and grits. We had reservations but opted to sit at the bar when our table wasn't ready. Great service from Travis and his partner bartender. Fun conversation with them, good recommendation from them from the menu. Menu was for July so we will definitely go back to check out the seasonal menu!
