We toured Grand Teton and Yellowstone National Parks in August 2008 and loved every minute of it! Except the accommodation inside the parks which was dire. The Big Moose Resort is outside the north east exit at Cooke City, taking you over the border into Montana. Coming through Cooke City at 7pm after a full day in the park, we did not expect to find anywhere open to buy food for our self-catering that evening. A man was sat in a rocking chair outside a little grocery store and said that he stayed open as long as people were passing! We managed to buy the basics and enjoyed his friendly service. The Big Moose Resort is a little outside the town of Cooke City on the main road and very easy to find. Arriving late, we found that our host, Bev, had left instructions to our cabin - number 9. Wow! It was absolutely fantastic. It had been newly renovated inside. All pine panelling, high ceilings with ceiling fans (welcome summer addition), a small modern kitchen with lovely big mugs and plenty of cooking utensils. There was a new 'wood-burning' stove which was gas powered, but very realistic. There were two double beds at the back of the cabin (sooo comfortable!) and a t.v. which received some cable channels. The bathroom was new with large shower, loads of hot water and complimentary toiletries. It was spacious and homely. I can't tell you how delightful it was to sit on the verandah in the evening and sip beer with shy mule deer wandering within feet of you! We saw more wildlife within a few miles of Big Moose Resort than we saw in the Lamar Valley within the Park. We saw a moose right by the roadside, heard coyotes barking and much more. You really cannot beat the ride along the Beartooth Pass. Its scenic, majestic and, best of all, devoid of all those crowds that can spoil Yellowstone. The ride out to Red Lodge and Billings was simply wonderful! Bev was wonderful and friendly and very keen to help us find our way about. If you want to escape the crowds of Old Faithful and the feeling that you are being exploited in Yellowstone, get yourself out to Cooke City and the Big Moose Resort and grab a bit of real countryside. You can't beat the Big Moose Resort. Places like Pahaska Tepee are no comparison.

During our recent trip to Yellowstone, we booked three nights at the Big Moose Resort in Cooke City. This is a small property with individual or duplex log cabins. We stayed in a duplex cabin that had a nice, complete kitchen, dining area, couch, bath with shower and bedroom with 2 queen size beds. it was clean, cozy, comfortable and relaxing to return to at the end of a long day. The owner was great, very pleasant and made sure we had everything we needed. We felt very welcome and plan to return in the winter, their big season for snowmobiling. Though we could hear the others a little in the other side, if you are traveling with a group, this would be a good place as there was a connecting door between the units. Its about 2 miles out of Cooke City so its definitely quiet and peaceful there.
