Originally rented from founder Elizabeth Parsons in 1991. She had converted a larger rectangular structure into 6 apartment / condos on the beach block. She was a very exacting German born perfectionist who was an amazing Gardener. She had trouble building above 1 story but eventually got it approved. The first time we rented the large 3 bedroom above her unit which had , at the time an incredible sea view. A very very short walk to the end of the block (75 yards) then over the dunes to the water. The second time we were only able to get a one bedroom (in 1996).Elizabeth had died earlier in the year & her partner Eldred was living in her unit in the summer & managing some rentals ( life estate?)... The weather wasn't so good that year. We met Elizabeth's daughter & husband who had kid's close to our kid's ages. Immediately they invited us to a birthday party for the son at which we had a riot.. We completely forgot about Cape May for years & then returned end of August this year (2014)... Immediately upon getting out of our vintage VW Westy a lady in a wedding dress & cowboy boots said "I'm in from St. Paul , MN & I'm getting married right now in the Parson's Folly garden - please come" (she & her extended family/wedding party were occupying multiple units)...Another guy ( Tony - instant invitee also staying at Parson's) said he was a classical guitarist & provided some terrific music for nuptials .. I thought that the vibe of this place hasn't really changed too much!
The condo ( we booked last week of only unit available at last minute ( early July) was clean ,everything worked & landlord Rich is very cool with the whole thing being done on-line. Totally relaxing.... Weather gorgeous ...love the outside showers & bathroom which acts as a relief valve in the delicious warm weather.... There are complementary charcoal barbecues. It's amazing how all the systems function so smoothly 18 years after the creator's passing. This is a stupendous value for a beach vacation.
My husband and I took our 5 and 3 year old grandkids for a few days to Parson's Folly in Cape May Point, NJ, and had a wonderful time. For years I have found owner rentals to be a great value, no matter where the destination. This was no exception! The owner is exceptionally friendly and helpful in all aspects; the apartment/condo was just as we expected from the advertising and reviews....actually more than we expected! It is small. When the owner suggests up to 4, that is correct. There is a very nice, comfortable bedroom, one full bath, a very organized, well appointed kitchen, a small living area and a small enclosed porch in the front. Everything is immaculate! You can tell the pride and care of the owners just by seeing how perfectly organized everything is to get the absolute most out of a rather small area. The living room has a sofa bed and a futon. Our little ones slept on them without pulling them out the first night; the second night their mom had come to take them home the next day, so the little ones were in the sofa bed and their mom on the open futon. We actually had 5 in the apartment that one night. It was feasible, but not something I would want to do for more than a night or two.
The apartment is part of a big old house that has been there for a long, long time and looks just like you would expect in its quaint neighborhood. The owner divided it into apartments when her husband died...and then the apartments were later sold as condos. The orignal owner was a master gardener, and there is a lovely garden area available to all of the apartments...beautiful English garden beds in the garden and along the walkways.
There are outdoor showers, bathrooms, and areas for hosing down all of your beach gear. The owner leaves you with 4 beach passes (required), 2 nice beach chairs, a beach umbrella, and even a beach cart to help you get everything to the beach. There is WIFI that worked like a charm, good service from Verizon on cell phones, nice flat screen tv in the living room....Lots of seating either in the kitchen or porch for visiting or dining.
The beach steps and walkway is just a stone's throw from the backyard of the house! This beach has a lifeguard stand right there where you would come onto the beach.... You have the perfect view for watching sunsets from this location. The little beach cottages all along the narrow streets in this Cape May Point neighborhood are so much fun if you are a fan of older beach cottages! Small front yards filled with flowers of every kind; picket fencing or some kind of decorative fencing as well. Just completely charming! [I think a beach book should be written about this area!]
People in the neighborhood were not driving...they were walking or riding bikes...lots of families....a very, very safe environment!
We loved the town of Cape May, but, honestly I am glad we were just beyond the crowds by a mile or two. My husband and I enjoyed going on the historical trolley tour, eating at The Ugly Mug right in the middle of things on Washington Street. It was fun looking in all of the shops and riding through the historic district seeing all of the Beautiful Victorian homes! Do not think of going without taking the tour, learning the history and having time to really enjoy the beauty of each home.
I hope we get back! We always favor a beach vacation and have been to many...but none this far north along the Atlantic. It was a real treat! The beach is very nice, the weather beats Florida this time of year by a mile! And the accommodations were wonderful.
We live in northern VA outside of dc. We shortened our trip considerably and added some fun, too, by taking the ferry from Cape May across to Lewes, Delaware. My daughter did this as well with her little ones.
Go! Relax and enjoy a cozy stay in a neat location!
