We drove by this Highlands standby restaurant today only to find it closed. There are no signs that they are out of business, but there are no signs that that still are

Thank Sockster

We enjoyed a, surprisingly, amazing dinner/night at this restaurant tonight. Our waitress, Sam, was great! One of the most entertaining and accommodating servers we have ever had. While enjoying our excellent dinner (skirt steak and shrimp) we got to watch them feed "buddy" the turtle. This turtle in their giant koi pond thinks its a dog and comes when you call his name and climbs up the rocks for food. All in all the experience was perfect and we cannot wait to return.

After hours of biking around the shore and town, I was famished! My friend and I went to this place and the food was delicious! We had fried yuca, oxtail, moro, ropa vieja, fried plantains, and sangria. The food was delicious. The sangria was also really good because it was in the refreshing side, the fruits were fresh, and the alcohol was just right (I don't drink so, for many it might had been too soft!). The customer service was even better! They came to check on us every couple minutes, to be sure we did not need anything. The atmosphere was pleasant and relaxing. The music was low, which allowed us to have a conversation without yelling at each other. If you're in town, I would recommend you to come and eat here.

Years ago we were regulars here. Never came back after Sandy. Industry Magazine had an article on this restaurant and on Chef Carlos. We ware surprised to see that it was open. We were not expecting much being that this place has been here for so long. Well!!!! What an amazing surprise!! This is one of the best Cuban meals I've had in a long time, please know that I am a very good Cuban cook.
The lechoncito, yuca, sweet plantains, Cuban sandwich, fries plantains, shrimp enchilada, black beans YUUUUUMMYYYY

Thank Marta G

Nice restaurant with lots of potential!!! We have been enjoying Havana Tropical Café since it first opened and we have seen its transformation over the years; before Super Storm Sandy this restaurant offered authentic Cuban cuisine at a great value, (as compare to the inexpensive Cuban food found in cafeteria type of restaurants in Union City). The restaurant's atmosphere and décor along with the food validated the prices then. If I remember correctly, our dish of choice at the time was "Rabo Encendido" which is oxtail, a staple in Cuban cuisine but reserved for special occasions at home due to the high price tag of the oxtails at the stores! This dish was masterfully and authentically represented with the right amount of spices in the red sauce that accompanied the melt in your mouth meat that came off effortless from bones.. Unforgettable!! This dish came along with white rice and black beans and fried yellow plantains. All well prepared and served. We tried the same dish after the restaurant re-opened after Sandy and the dish was not the same even after repeated tries, the sauce became bland and uninteresting, the meat tender but not to same point as previous.. In other words, a let down!!! The service suffered deficiencies also with less attention and care while the prices on the menu doubled... I am glad to say that we recently re-visited and were impressed with the changes even though the service staff lacks the vibrancy it possessed in the past. We cautiously sat at the outside bar area where at the time lively live music was playing; we reviewed the menu and were happy that the prices were more reasonable. I ordered the Cuban Mojito- refreshing and good and my husband a Cuba Libre, (rum and coke) which he enjoyed without any comments!! We were not too hungry so we both shared the "Mariquitas" or green plantains appetizer and as an Entrée, "Ropa Vieja" or flank steak cooked in a red sauce, another Cuban cuisine staple. Both dishes were adequately prepared and presented. Overall, we are glad of the positive changes made to this restaurant; it merits repeated visits!!
