Greenhouse at Babylonstoren
Ranked #35 of 98 Restaurants in Franschhoek
Certificate of Excellence
Price range: US$9 - US$11
Description: The Greenhouse, at the rear of the garden, is a sight for sore eyes. There's no better place to sit than here under our recently planted oak trees and enjoy an informal, picnic-style snack of tea and buttermilk scones or a more substantial meal of artisanal breads with handcrafted cheeses and dressed meats served with our homemade herb oils, chutneys, preserves and relishes. Not to mention our fresh garden salads. The 26m vintage conservatory in dark green steel was custom built in France by Serres et Ferronneries d'Antan for Babylonstoren. Paired with a collection of brick red tables and colourful green Luxembourg chairs (the classic park chair design), the Greenhouse is a surprising but thoroughly logical refreshment station for guests who have completed the garden tour. All our food is served picnic-style in wooden crates with the preserves, jams and salads packaged in weck jars, while fresh bread from our old wood-fired oven, and boerewors rolls and golden handcut chips all come wrapped in the iconic blue and white Babylonstoren paper. Despite its obvious aesthetic appeal and its function as a refreshment station, The Greenhouse also performs a vital role in the garden. It is here where plants or varietals are brought when they struggle to make it in the formal garden due to the Western Cape's winter rainfall or the lack of humidity in summer. And so you'll find that exotic granadillas, ginger, cardamom, pineapples, dragonfruit, vanilla, guavadellas and even a baobab tree, all reside here. The Greenhouse menu subscribes to the self-same 'pick, clean and serve' philosophy as Babel, but with a strong emphasis on honest food with little to no fuss.

This gets incredibly busy at lunchtime with day visitors to Babylonstoren. However it's very nice for a chilled lunch between bike rides. The menu is simple though, but delicious.

The Greenhouse truly is the best spot to unwind and refresh after a walk or ride in the garden.

Best wishes,

Came here with my husband at the recommendation of our hotel owner. We came here on our second day in Franshhoek and I was still feeling the effects of travels sickness so the heat was unbearable. The greenhouse restaurant though was perfect. A menu full of fresh fruit and veg. We both had the Gazpacho which was amazing! We then had a short walk around the gardens before I started to feel a bit dizzy and we had to head back. We could have spent most of the day here though if I hadn't felt so bad.

Remarkable as the gardens are, the Greenhouse menu is fairly incoherent (and terrible value for money.)

I'd visit the gardens again, but there are so many nicer restaurants in the area.

My recommendation; stay away.

We are sad to hear that you did not enjoy your visit to the Greenhouse tea garden. We do recommend visiting Babel restaurant which is our more formal restaurant as to the tea garden. We hope that this will be a remarkable experience like the garden!

Best wishes,

First we waited for a table for 30 minutes, which was fine. However, when we got a table no one came to take our order and it was impossible to get in touch with any of the waiters. After 20 minutes we finally got to place our order. Again we had to wait for 20 minutes just to get our drinks - we even had to ask a waiter for the drinks which would could point out since they had been standing ready in the bar. When we finally got the food, they messed up our order, however, they fixed it pretty quickly.
The food was fine and the way it was served in small jars were interesting and delicious, but not at all worth the wait - there are many other great places in the area.
