When we decided to go to Taos Pueblo from Santa Fe, our friends told us to take the high road and stop by Peñasco to eat lunch at the Sugar Nymphs Cafe. It sounded intriguing and they swore it was delicious. It was. On both counts. The restaurant shares the building with a theater, which is very active, especially in the summer, and has apparently good shows, worth seeing. The restaurant's rest room is the theater's, so a really close association. The restaurant is not glitzy or high-end, but the food is delicious and it includes sometimes hard-to-find choices like vegan and gluten-free. We had burgers and salad or soup and I ordered a veggie burger (home-made black bean) on gluten-free bread and it was delicious. My husband's standard beef burger was tasty, too. They also offer a high-altitude drink of lemon, ginger, and Perrier and a little sugar that was so good that we took some "to go" when we left. We were very virtuous and declined the desserts, but there were plenty of home made choices like apple crisp, chocolate cake and carrot cake. The decor is farm-like and simple, but there is art for sale on the walls -- quite nice it was, too. We would highly recommend this if you are going from Santa Fe to Taos -- a really interesting stop.

Definitely consider this place for lunch if you are taking the high road to Taos.

We missed this place by about 15 minutes so couldn’t comment much on the food except for the carrot cake and scones. There were still a few diners there close to 3pm. The outside of the restaurant is decorated with paintings. The carrot cake was very fresh with real slice of carrot and the pineapple added a bit of the sweetness.

Will stop by again next time.

Our waiter seemed to be 15 years old. There is a theater adjacent to the dining room...upon asking, he said he didn't know anything about it..... "how can that be?"
Service was slow.... one waiter..... very busy for lunch.... we ate at 1:15pm
Green hatch chile cheeseburger was a WOW!... 10 on a scale of 10
We'd do it again... great food.....
ambiance is nothing short of weird....
some of the clientele were a little weird as well....
fun time! glad we went

We stopped here for lunch on the way to Taos. Burgers were excellent, very tasty but the service although very friendly was extremely slow. May be it is just the local slow life style. Cakes looked great and tempting.

This was by far the best food we had on our trip to New Mexico. We ate at a lot of restaurants in Taos and Santa Fe and this was the best. The food is authentic , the atmosphere is unique, and the service was over the top. I haven't mentioned the carrot cake -- the biggest slice ever - and over the moon great. Go out of your way to visit this little spot on the side of the road, you won't be disappointed.
