My family and I just finished a four night stay at Hongonyi and had some of the most memorable times of our lives. The setting, off the beaten path and back in the African "bush" was like something from the National Geographic channel. Our drive, before we made it to our room, included giraffe, warthogs, monkeys, and impala. Once we arrived, we understood why this place is rated so highly.
While not a five star resort, the minute we drove up we were taken by the "authentic" African setting. The lounge area was warmed by a wood fire as guests sat on the deck watching the resident rhinos that made an appearance. The room, when we arrived, was clean, spacious, and full of character. The exposed wood beams, high thatch ceiling, and stairway to the loft made a great environment to rest between meals and game drives. The food was outstanding and reasonably priced. We were called nightly by the beating of drums to our tables and were never disappointed. By the way, where else in the world will you find a resident porcupine (named Elvis) wandering through nightly to greet each guest? Only here I would assume.
The game drives were outstanding, fun, educational, and well run. Resident naturalists Gary and Merina patiently listened to and answered each question, no matter how small. They went out of their way, continually, to make sure that each drive was special. I cannot overstate just how good they are.
If you are looking for a hotel in the bush, you might look elsewhere. However, if you are looking for a place to make memories with your family, experience "real" Africa, experience wildlife up close (all at a cost that won't break the bank) then Hongonyi is the place for you. Trust me.
