Hongonyi is a private gamepark that deserves a long stay Thomas & Shery, Gary & Marina were so good as guides to make us discover the beauty of this park and the diversity of nature and wildlife. We spent a fantastic stay in July . Rooms are very confortable and all the employees very nice with their guests . Food was very good (even for french people !) in a very warm atmosphere It was also wonderfull to feed the cheetas with Thomas. And what a great time to have a drink in the bush at sunset time looking at stars in the sky !

My family and I just finished a four night stay at Hongonyi and had some of the most memorable times of our lives. The setting, off the beaten path and back in the African "bush" was like something from the National Geographic channel. Our drive, before we made it to our room, included giraffe, warthogs, monkeys, and impala. Once we arrived, we understood why this place is rated so highly.

While not a five star resort, the minute we drove up we were taken by the "authentic" African setting. The lounge area was warmed by a wood fire as guests sat on the deck watching the resident rhinos that made an appearance. The room, when we arrived, was clean, spacious, and full of character. The exposed wood beams, high thatch ceiling, and stairway to the loft made a great environment to rest between meals and game drives. The food was outstanding and reasonably priced. We were called nightly by the beating of drums to our tables and were never disappointed. By the way, where else in the world will you find a resident porcupine (named Elvis) wandering through nightly to greet each guest? Only here I would assume.

The game drives were outstanding, fun, educational, and well run. Resident naturalists Gary and Merina patiently listened to and answered each question, no matter how small. They went out of their way, continually, to make sure that each drive was special. I cannot overstate just how good they are.

If you are looking for a hotel in the bush, you might look elsewhere. However, if you are looking for a place to make memories with your family, experience "real" Africa, experience wildlife up close (all at a cost that won't break the bank) then Hongonyi is the place for you. Trust me.

First I must write that when my wife and I got back to Johannesburg and later to Israel we were very excited, there fore we decided to wait for awhile to allow the excitement to pass and to write an objective review.

Hongonyi is the best place we stayed in South Africa. Great experience and awesome hospitality - Marina, Gary and all the staff made our stay wonderful! The costs are also very reasonable.

My wife and I traveled to South Africa for the world cup and stayed for two more weeks after the final. On July 12 we were suppose to drive from Johannesburg to Hongonyi. However, on our way to the highway we had a small car crash. Then we started to have the Hongonyi experience - when I called Marina, the lodge manager, she instantly offered her help, asked how we feel made sure we are safe. When I said that we might not make it to the reserve before dark and asked if it is possible to postponed everything (3 nights, drives and more) in a day, Marina immediately agreed, said that she will arrange everything and made me promise that I will call to let her know that we are good and that we finished the procedure with the local police.

After all this we felt down, but as soon as we got to Hongonyi everything changed in a second! Marina welcomed us and took us for a nice drink at the bar. 30 minutes later we already had a evening drive with Gary who made us jump out of the land-rover and walk with him into the bush to look for cheetahs!

Later we had a great booma diner with Marina and 4 other guests - was great. I guess you already understand - we had a great time, enjoyed the great hospitality and of course - had the pleasure to see so many interesting animals both during game drives and bush walks.

When we drove to the Kruger Marina and Gary helped us plan our drive.

Marina, Gary and everyone in Hongonyi - thank you for the great time, I am sure we will visit you again! We came for the animals and made true friends!

Thanks,
Hana and Guy,
Israel

P.S., we are still very excited :)

Great place to both get some relaxation in and enjoy being in Africa. The staff were fantastic as were the meals. Activities were very well priced and it is small enough that you feel special. The rooms were of the higher end and very clean. Great place to enjoy a few drinks by the pool and soak up some sun too.

We stayed for 2 nights (Oct 17 and 18th) during our four day trip to the Kruger parks. Overall we had a fantastic stay, as it was the first time for 3 of our party to be in the African bush the lodge was perfect as a fairly luxurious introduction to safaris. We found the staff (rangers Gary & Marina and Evelyn - cook) very helpful and informative. Self driving into the park we had already seen giraffe, water buffalo and wildebeest and upon entry were met with two Rhino 'statues', although when both moved our hearts were pounding! Straight away Marina took us out on a night drive where we ended up seeing their 3 cheetahs and various other animals.

The bush walk with Gary was fun, but best of all was the ability to relax, enjoy the pool and bar areas in between game drives.

Both rooms were well appointed and the mosquito nets very reassuring.

To see the BIG 5, Marina arranged a drive in the neighbouring larger Thorny Bush reserve. Rex our driver was fantastic and by the end of the drive we had seen lion (with cubs), cheetah hunting, herd of elephants, Rhino and water buffalo. The larger reserve benefits from having multiple drives simultaneously, in radio contact, tracking the animals. Not for the faint hearted as they do go off-road; but it was clear the animals did not see these giant game drive 4X4s as a threat.

Overall a great lodge, well maintained and a great team to look after visitors.
