Kwandwe Great Fish River Lodge
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed 27 October 2017

This was our third visit to Kwandwe. We have been impressed with the accommodation, game drives and sheer luxury enhanced by excellent staff - and this visit reinforced our impression of this wonderful place.

The rooms are excellent - comfortable and well-equipped (including wifi), the food is stunningly good and plentiful (as witnessed by my expanding waistline!), the staff couldn't be more friendly, helpful and efficient.

Our ranger (Alfie) and spotter (Yongama) on the game drives were excellent. Although we didn't see the elusive leopards, we did see a great many of the lovely animals (including aardwolf and bat-eared foxes which we hadn't seen on our previous visits).

We are already planning our return in 2019!

Dear erMar60,

Thank you for taking the time to leave your feedback, it is great to hear that you enjoyed your third stay with us as much as the previous two! In spite of not having seen leopard, the aardwolf and bat-eared foxes are very special critters, so it's great that you were able to see them.

We will be sure to pass on your feedback to Alfie, Yongama and the rest of the Great Fish River Lodge team - and look forward to welcoming you back in 2019!

Kind regards,
The Kwandwe team

The owners should change the name to: Fabulous Great Fish River Lodge. What a wonderful experience! The lodge and our experiences here too my breath away! Our group of 17 took over the lodge and we were treated like royalty from our arrival to the moment we left! The rooms were wonderful and the food far exceeded our expectations! There was never a single complaint from a person at any time! I would tell Everyone to stay here! What a wonderful time! I’d go back again tomorrow if we could!

From the moment you arrive you will realise this is a very special place. The hospitality is perfect, attentive yet discreet. The main lodge has been tastefully and considerately decorated. We enjoyed using the space when having our meals (delicious), drinks and meeting for our drives.

The drives:
Andy (spotter) and Mark (driver) are a fantastic team. Andy was able to spot the tiniest signs of life in the bush and lead us right to some of the most interesting and amazing things I’ll ever see. We also did a walking safari - not to be missed. We stalked a rhino on foot and it was incredible to experience that without the car and other guests.

The private lodges are very comfortable and again immaculately designed and kept. Perhaps, not the most authentic experience if you like the idea of traditional tent style safari. We were aware of this before we came and this time opted for the more homely stay. As well as other surprises, my partner had arranged for our private lodge to be decorated for the season, and the staff did a brilliant job of making it feel Christmassy. I really appreciated all the extra effort that went into our stay especially as I was reluctant to be away from family at that time of year.

Staying here really did feel like an all round extraordinary experience which is thoughtfully put together by great staff, beautiful environments and wildlife conservation. I couldn’t have asked for more.

My wife and I spent four great nights at Kwandwe in mid-August. The safari was the second safari and part of a longer trip to celebrate a key birthday.

We elected to safari at this time as our research indicated that it was one of the best times of the year, to go. As a result the weather was cool; cold at times; particularly in the mornings. We also experienced some rain. The game reserve team were delighted as this was the first rain after a long drought in the area. The vehicles used at Kwandwe do not include roof covers; but they do provide hot water bottles and ponchos. We got wet; but had great fun. One drive was almost cancelled as it was just too wet; but the team organised a covered vehicle for the morning drive; which was not great from a viewing point of view; but is an example of their fabulous level of service.

The wild life was active as a result and we were very fortunate to witness some wonderful spectacles including the big 5. We did manage to spot; the back, of a black rhino but otherwise they were elusive. They use spotter/trackers at Kwandwe; Rushi was great and extremely helpful. Our Ranger; Conor was a lovely chap very knowledgeable and had time for everyone.

The accommodation at Great Fish River River Lodge is high quality and extremely comfortable. We were allocated room 1; which is the furthest from the Lodge; which meant that we had un-obstructed views over the landscape . The Lodge and accommodation are in the middle of the game park and not surrounded by a fence; security guards escort between the two after the hours of darkness.

The lodge is lovely; the central fires warmed the place to create a very welcoming spot for meals and relaxation. The fires were not always alight but the staff were always available to sort on request. The temperatures were occasionally low at the tables adjacent to the window. Temporary heaters were utilised; but did not always deliver sufficiently. Our first lunch was taken on the terrace which overlooks the river; we were joined by the occasional monkey.

The food and drink were excellent and the service wonderful. All the staff were very good; the attention and care provided from the welcome in reception; through the singing to departure was excellent.

We had a great time; saw the big 5; the leopard was a wonderful experience, we were delighted with our second safari. We would love to do more in the future.

We (4 adults) stayed for 3 nights at KGFRL in early August 2017, having been recommended by friends in the UK. It did not disappoint! The staff were friendly and welcoming, the food was delicious, our rooms were so comfy, with great views. Even candles around the bath on our last night! Lovely touches :-)
The safari experience was great. Our guides Doc and Ivan were knowledgable and enthusiatic and out tracker, Munde was wonderful - quiet, polite and great at his job!
We saw whole hurds of elephants (about70!) cheetah eating baby antelopes (sad for the antelope but happy for the cheetah!) baboons, zebra, rhino's (mother and baby sauntering down the road when we stopped for sundowners was a particular highlight!)
giraffe's, hippo's, ostriches - every day was diffent and each day was wonderful! We were sad to leave, but feel very grateful for such a wonderful experience.
A huge thank you to all the satff at KGFRL for making our stay such a great one.
I did feel the need to sing all Disney songs, but thats just me!
