As this was our first time on safari we really had no idea what to expect but what a fantastic time we had. We arrived early afternoon and were shown to our room. We had Room 6 which we would recommend as it is nearest to the main lodge. The room was lovely with a huge, very comfortable bed and a view over the river and hills where you could spy nyalas and zebras. The bathroom had a bath plus indoor and outdoor shower. On the decking are 2 sun chairs beside a private plunge pool. One of our highlights was being on the sun chairs when a group of nyalas decided to come to drink from our pool, paying no attention to us!
Every morning and afternoon we went on a game drive with 2 or 3 other guests and the fantastic double act who are Dino (ranger) and Ernie (tracker). What fun we had! Over our 5 drives we had so many memorable experiences - watching elephants on the move through the trees, being confronted by a bull elephant blocking our path, cheetahs strolling past us, lions snoozing and leaving the vehicle to walk towards some giraffes, having muffins and coffee and even our dinner starters out in the middle of nowhere!
By the way if you visit at this time of year, late Oct/early Nov, all you need is a fleece to keep you warm at times. There are also blankets in the vehicle which you can wrap round yourself. We wore shorts both morning and afternoon and were fine. Trainers are perfect for clambering up and down from the truck. No need to bring dressy clothes for dinner. Anything goes! Bring neutral coloured clothing especially if you are going on a walk with your ranger.
In the morning you get a wake up call at 5 and before you go out you can have juices and fruit. Breakfast is served after you come back. Iced drinks and cake are served before the afternoon drive.
Thanks too to Oza for looking after us so well. All the staff were very friendly and we felt really at home.
The food improved as the days went on and we had a very pleasant last night dinner with Dino and our fellow guests.
All in all a fantastic experience which we won’t forget in a hurry!

Room Tip: Close to the main building.

Kwandwe was the start of our honeymoon trip and it couldn’t have been any better.

Location: The Great Fish River Lodge is located within the Kwandwe Private Game Reserve. It takes some time to get to the reception area but it’s worth the trip. We were offered some fresh lemonade and cookies before a ranger drove us to the lodge (about 20 minutes drive). The lodge consists of a main building (meeting point, breakfast, dinner and cosy fireplace) and the rooms / cottages. It’s situated above a river so you see lots of animals around.

Rooms: Our suite was awesome- beautiful sundeck with a pool and some deckchairs. Inside a huge bathroom with a nice tub (open the huge windows and you’re having your bath almost outside) and shower (in-and outdoor). Fully equipped minibar and a comfortable bed made it just perfect. From the terrace you can watch the animals (bring binoculars).

Staff and experience: it’s hard to find the right words for this exceptional experience. Everybody was more than attentive and recalled our name and preferences (e.g. my wife is vegetarian). We had a honeymoon surprise when we arrived and the evening before we left (THANKS!).
Be prepared to get up early- wake-up call comes at 5am and the first game drive of the day starts at 5:30. The second one is in the afternoon and starts at 4pm each of them lasting for around 4 hours. Make sure to bring a hat / cap and warm clothes- it can become really chilly on the drive. It was our first safari and we saw lots of animals (unfortunately not the leopard). Other guests said that they saw more animals in other parks but for us this was just right.

Special thanks go out to Marc (our ranger), Andy (our tracker) and Pat who always served us very delicious food :)

Would we return? Of course :)

The reserve is amazing it is full of animals and many different landscapes ,rivers, mountains and bushes.
Staying there is a must for first time Safari experience they made our trip so wonderful and we made many beautiful memories.
Everything was perfect the villa was nice we woke up to see some antelopes in our patio.
The Safari trips were perfect and we enjoyed Dino company he was so funny.
He and his partner helped us find all the animals we wished to see.
We were lucky to see the cheetah eating his prey several times.
The villa is clean I didn’t see and insects in september.
I- just have 2 suggestions
1 there should be a pastry chef to make some nice pastries for breakfast and tea time i love sweets and pastries i think all ladies do.
2-the escort that escorts us at night to our villa should carry a weapon with the flash light just to be safe.
Other than that is was an amazing experience that I would love to do again and again.
I’m so happy we choose this reserve the land is so big and they go out of the way to follow cats.

This was our third visit to Kwandwe. We have been impressed with the accommodation, game drives and sheer luxury enhanced by excellent staff - and this visit reinforced our impression of this wonderful place.

The rooms are excellent - comfortable and well-equipped (including wifi), the food is stunningly good and plentiful (as witnessed by my expanding waistline!), the staff couldn't be more friendly, helpful and efficient.

Our ranger (Alfie) and spotter (Yongama) on the game drives were excellent. Although we didn't see the elusive leopards, we did see a great many of the lovely animals (including aardwolf and bat-eared foxes which we hadn't seen on our previous visits).

We are already planning our return in 2019!

Dear erMar60,

Thank you for taking the time to leave your feedback, it is great to hear that you enjoyed your third stay with us as much as the previous two! In spite of not having seen leopard, the aardwolf and bat-eared foxes are very special critters, so it's great that you were able to see them.

We will be sure to pass on your feedback to Alfie, Yongama and the rest of the Great Fish River Lodge team - and look forward to welcoming you back in 2019!

Kind regards,
The Kwandwe team

The owners should change the name to: Fabulous Great Fish River Lodge. What a wonderful experience! The lodge and our experiences here too my breath away! Our group of 17 took over the lodge and we were treated like royalty from our arrival to the moment we left! The rooms were wonderful and the food far exceeded our expectations! There was never a single complaint from a person at any time! I would tell Everyone to stay here! What a wonderful time! I’d go back again tomorrow if we could!
