Review of High Road to Taos

We drove the High Road between Taos and Santa Fe. It’s a lovely, leisurely drive through quintessential New Mexico scenery. We much prefer the backroads to the highways. Take your time and enjoy it.

If you're going to Taos, this route is mandatory! It's prettiest if you drive it from Santa Fe to Taos although going the other way around works, too. The views are magnificent, the small towns interesting and a trip back in time. Take the river road back down to Santa Fe as it's a pretty drive, too.

We took the road for scenic views but found it has many small villages with art and other crafts along the way. Galleries galore with great local artists

The “high road” is to be savored with stops along the way. The more expedient route along the Rio Grande is nice too, but lacks the charm of the road less travelled.

Definitely not the quick route but well worth the extra time for the experience. Several small towns with art galleries and local cuisine to enjoy. Stunning panoramas that are worth much more than the price of admission (free). Also this is the route to the village of Chimayo and the famous shrine - a must see. For chiliheads, make sure to buy some of the local dried Chimayo chili pods.
